Celebrating Success at Tata Steel’s Shotton Works! 🏆
We’re thrilled to announce that Tata Steel’s Shotton Works site in Deeside, North Wales, has achieved The Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark award for land management – the only site in Wales to hold this challenging standard!
Biodiversity Benchmark accreditation recognises businesses’ continual enhancement and protection of biodiversity on their land. At Shotton Works, a rich mosaic of habitats – including grassland, woodland, reedbeds, and wetlands – supports an incredible variety of wildlife.
Highlights include:
✨ Common terns: Conservation efforts have grown the colony to almost 400 fledglings annually, from just 17 in 1970, making it the largest common tern colony in Wales and among the top five in the UK.
✨ Habitats support species like grass snakes, badgers, dragonflies, and over 80 bird species have been recorded.
The benefits extend to people, too! With walking routes, bird hides, and an education centre, the site also promotes wellbeing through ranger-led walks, cleanup days, and school visits.
Congratulations to Tata Steel for their commitment to nature and community!
