We’re proud to announce #Americares has awarded over $1 million in emergency funding to restore health care services in five states in the aftermath of #HurricaneHelene. Twenty-eight nonprofit organizations providing free or low-cost care are receiving grants ranging from $20,000 to $150,000 to keep their doors open, repair storm damage, replace essential medicines and equipment, and conduct outreach to underserved communities. Facilities Manager Robbie Tipton, pictured here, stands in the remnants of Mountain Community Health Partnership's behavioral health care facility and physical therapy center after being flooded with 7 feet of water. The Partnership's CEO Tim Evans said the emergency funding will help keep their other health facilities open in mountain communities where schools are still closed, and the tap water is still unsafe to drink a month after the hurricane. Beyond financial support, Americares has deployed disaster mental health specialists to assist health care providers and first responders, as well as a mobile clinic to deliver medical care in the hardest-hit areas. So far, we’ve shipped over 16 tons of medicine and supplies, including 1,300 bottles of infant formula and 3,800 tetanus vaccines. We also set up four water purification systems providing safe drinking water to communities in #Asheville and #Swannanoa, N.C. This month, #Americares Director of Climate and Disaster Resilience, Elena Ateva, joined the Forum on Advancing Inclusive Climate Action in Foreign Policy and Development at the White House. The forum discussed the increasingly pressing questions of how to develop and apply more effective and inclusive actions that benefit the communities most impacted by #ClimateChange. "Climate change does not affect all of us equally. Around the world, people who have contributed the least to the problem are impacted most. That is why we are supporting local community resources such as frontline clinics and helping them to build climate resilience so they are ready the next time extreme weather strikes.” Learn more about our climate and disaster resilience work at https://lnkd.in/e8e38fBW

It has been one month since #HurricaneHelene devastated the southeastern United States with #Milton following suit just two weeks later as back to back storms. In response, #Americares reached out to 360 partner organizations across eight states, mostly clinics serving low-income residents without health insurance, to offer assistance. Thanks to generous donor support, we have committed over $800,000 in emergency funding, shipped over 6 tons of relief supplies, provided #MentalHealth support to survivors and installed four emergency water systems. The road to recovery may be long, but Americares is committed to meeting the health needs of these communities. Learn more about our response and timeline: https://lnkd.in/e3r2EWbJ

Nearly a month after #HurricaneHelene devastated western #NorthCarolina, many continue to struggle with access to drinkable water across the region. To meet the needs of those impacted by the storm, Americares, in partnership with Planet Water Foundation, has installed four water purification systems for communities without drinkable water. Combined, the #AquaBlock water systems - three in #Asheville and one in #Swannanoa - have the capacity to produce up to 17,000 gallons of safe drinking water a day for thousands of hurricane survivors in Buncombe County. The health effects of #ClimateChange are here. That's why we're providing the resources and knowledge to help patients, providers, caregivers and administrators respond. In collaboration with Harvard C-CHANGE, we recently released an expanded toolkit for health providers facing challenges from heat, wildfires, hurricanes, and floods. With insights from 19 clinics, this expanded version includes expanded tools for supporting patients during extreme weather, resources on how heat affects medications, and planning tools for at-risk groups like pregnant individuals. Since its launch, the toolkit has been downloaded over 20,000 times, showing how vital these resources are. Whether you’re a medical professional or an individual who wants to better prepare, these resources can help. #Americares https://lnkd.in/e5ye4tQ8

After disaster has struck a community, the impact extends beyond just physical damage. Trauma and stress ripple through communities often lasting far longer than the initial disaster. Addressing mental and physical health together is imperative. #MentalHealth support, or #MHPSS, is a vital resource that #Americares has been on the ground providing to both the survivors of #HurricaneHelene and the front line responders who continue to show up for their own community while they are also dealing with the fallout of the storm.
