🌟 Regional Training Highlight 🌟 Topic: #Psychosocial #Support in #Emergencies -West Region, a collaborative effort by the National Institute of Disaster Management, Sphere India, and Americares India Foundation. 📅 Date: 27th-29th February 2024 📍 Venue: Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA) Centre, #Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra Gathering 25 participants from diverse organizations across 4 states of #Gujarat, #Goa, #Maharashtra, & #Rajasthan in #India, the training delved into vital topics: 🔷 Day 1 of the Regional Training on 'Psychosocial Support in Emergencies - West Region' commenced with an introductory panel featuring Anil Kumar Gupta Anirban Mitra & Vikrant Mahajan Day 1 also covered sessions on vulnerability assessment, offering an illuminating exploration into the #Basics of #Disaster #Management & #Impacts of Disaster. Attendees gained insights into the effects of disasters on individuals & communities, essential components of #psychosocial #care, & discussions on #vulnerability mapping & #needs of survivors. Additionally, the day focused on the role of community in #PSS, empowering attendees to identify survivors, assess their needs, & develop crucial #communication and support skills in high-stress environments. Participants also explored Psychosocial Care for #Women & #Children, acquiring skills to address their unique needs & create safe #environments. 🔷Day 2 was filled with enriching discussions & practical insights into the stages of reaction to disasters. Participants explored various categories of reactions, gaining a deeper understanding of diverse responses to crises. The day also featured an in-depth exploration of Basic Techniques of #Psychosocial #Care, equipping participants with essential skills such as ventilation, active listening, empathy, and #social support, fostering resilience and recovery among survivors. Furthermore, discussions on Follow-up & Referral Mechanisms facilitated peer-to-peer learning & collaboration, strengthening support networks. Day 3 focused on providing psychosocial care for vulnerable groups, including #people with #disabilities and the #elderly. Participants gained valuable insights into their unique challenges during disasters & acquired practical skills to create tailored, supportive environments. Discussions on #self-care & #caregivers emphasized effective strategies for managing stress, promoting self-care practices, and upholding #ethical standards in psychosocial care. Additionally, participants developed action plans for support & resilience, ensuring a comprehensive approach to psychosocial support in #emergencies. #waaw2023 *World Antimicrobial Resistance Week* To combat the rapidly rising cases of #antimicrobialresistance in India, Americares is dedicatedly working with hospitals and #health care professionals across the country. The Parivartan project of Americares India implements the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in 11 hospitals located in seven Indian states.  Our team observed the World AMR Awareness Week from 18th to 24th November. All the 11 hospitals commemorated this week with great enthusiasm, lots of excitement, and encouragement. Several activities were organised during the week that included slogan competition, poster competition, quiz competition, awareness-raising session, and felicitation ceremony. The WAAW celebrations witnessed participation from 920 members from 11 hospitals that included 187 doctors and 116 nurses.

Americares India observed the month of November as ‘Diabetes Awareness’ month with the aim to educate people on the causes, symptoms, and management of #diabetes . Our Mobile Health Centre team organized numerous engaging activities for the community members. This included street plays, rallies and educational sessions by our health facilitators. To make the sessions interesting and interactive, our team used the technique of storytelling for patients visiting the mobile health vans. People also took photos at the booth, proudly showcasing their attempt to control and manage diabetes.   We witnessed participation from over 4000 people across 130 slum locations in Mumbai. Lancet calls diabetes the ‘defining disease of the century’ and the disease is on rapid rise among the urban poor too. On 27th November, Americares India, in collaboration with Institute For Psychological Health, Thane , organized an event on Integrating Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) in Primary Health Care Services. The event began with capacity building session for Americares field team on the topic ‘Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy’. This was followed by another session on MHPSS where Americares and IPH shared insights from their collaborative journey and also shared experiences from the field. The event culminated with felicitation of Americares team members, applauding their efforts to seamlessly integrate MHPSS into the regular primary healthcare services. Dr. Anand Nadkarni, Psychiatrist and Managing Trustee, IPH, and Mr. Shripad Desai, DSVP, Country Team Liaison, Americares, were the delegates present at the event. Americares India, with the continued support of Pfizer, is committedly working to combat the rising cases of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in the country. AMR is a growing public health crisis, making it bigger killer than AIDS and malaria. This burden is constantly increasing in India, too. There is an urgent need to improve the awareness and educate people on the dangers of AMR and step-up efforts to prevent it.    Americares works with 11 hospitals in 7 states across India to strengthen the infrastructure for Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and enhance capacities of medical professionals in Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS).
