Atrium Health is mobilizing its MED-1 mobile hospital to Tryon, NC, in response to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene. Activated by the state, MED-1 will serve as a receiving hospital to triage, treat, and transfer patients as needed. MED-1 is the world’s first mobile emergency department of its kind, ready for deployment within 24 hours and operational within just a few hours of arrival. With digital x-ray, ultrasound, lab services, pharmacy, 14 acute care beds, and a 2-bed operating room, it brings comprehensive care directly to disaster sites. The unit is self-sustaining for up to 72 hours and consists of nearly a dozen vehicles, including essential medical and support trailers. Our dedicated team of health care professionals—nurses, doctors, trauma surgeons, paramedics, IT specialists and support staff—will be on-site and behind-the-scenes to ensure that patients receive the same high standard of care found at our fixed hospitals. As we continue to witness the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene and the aftermath of the storm, our hearts are heavy for the loss of life and the devastated communities. We are keeping those impacted top of mind and have initiated support. Our mobile medicine teams have made dozens of trips to transport patients and deliver supplies – via our Atrium Health MedCenter Air and Wake Forest Baptist AirCare air ambulance teams, as well as with our ambulances on the ground. We expect our MED-1 mobile hospital to be deployed to provide much-needed medical services in the disaster area. Additionally, Atrium Health Georgia EMS is assisting with search and rescue missions, transporting patients and answering emergency calls. Our organization and our teammates are committed to providing immediate and long-term disaster response and recovery for our communities. Rhett Jones was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive cancer that would leave him fighting for his life. After initial chemotherapy, he was admitted to Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital for a bone marrow transplant on March 15, 2022—his fifth birthday. His older brother Lane was his donor. While Rhett’s recovery was filled with complications, including a life-threatening pulmonary hemorrhage that required three weeks on ECMO, each heartbeat was a testament to his resilience. On October 27, 2023, nearly two years after his initial diagnosis, Rhett rang the end-of-treatment bell—a day his family and care team will always remember. Rhett is still taking several medications to manage complications from his transplant, but he embraces each day with joy. His journey is a testament to his bravery, the love of his family, the power of faith, and the expert care he received that continues to inspire hope. On Saturday, November 2, the Greater Charlotte community will celebrate patients like Rhett at the Hopebuilders 5K while helping to support vital patient programs at Levine Children's Hospital. A partnership between R4R: The Greg Olsen Foundation and Atrium Health has led to a significant donation of 89 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to Charlotte-area schools. With support from Defibtech, LLC, this initiative equips athletic trainers with crucial medical devices during practices and games. “AEDs save lives, and the athletes, coaches, staff, and spectators are safer when life-threatening emergencies happen on the sidelines,” said Jennifer Gardner, RN, MBA/MHA, assistant VP of outreach at Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute. With one additional AED for each partner school, the generous donation not only ensures immediate access to care but also brings peace of mind to parents. We are grateful to our friends, Kara and Greg Olsen, as they continue to make a lasting impact that extends well beyond the field! ❤️💚 Read more: https://bit.ly/3ZzX5Du

Sharon Faulk Tanksley and her son, Austin, recently visited Dr. Javier Oesterheld at Atrium Health Levine Children's Specialty Center to deliver a remarkable $100,000 donation in support of childhood cancer research. For over 15 years, the Tanksley family has demonstrated an unwavering commitment through the Adam Faulk Tanksley Foundation and their annual Christmas tree sale. As founding members of the Carolina Kids Cancer Research Coalition, they’ve contributed more than half a million dollars to Levine Children's developmental therapeutics program. The family's journey of philanthropy is deeply personal as their youngest son, Adam, bravely battled an aggressive kidney cancer at just three years old, spending over 325 days at Levine Children’s Hospital. Today, thanks to our dedicated cancer team, Adam is a 20-year-old cancer survivor! We are deeply grateful to the Tanksley family for their many contributions to childhood cancer research. 🎗️

Cancer survivorship is a journey that requires support for life 💙 For the first time, the supportive oncology teams at Atrium Health Levine Cancer hosted “Journey through Survivorship” events in Charlotte and Winston-Salem bringing together survivors, providers and caregivers to talk about a holistic approach to care. It’s an opportunity to build community and provide support for survivors and their families to help them live fuller lives during their cancer journey and beyond. Thank you to everyone who participated and made these events such a success. Together, we are building a stronger, more supportive community for all those affected by cancer.

This week, our friends at Chick-fil-A presented a $100,000 donation to Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital! The generous contribution was generated from the company's summer mobile order campaign, marking the fourth year of collaboration among over 50 Charlotte-area restaurants. Since 2011, Chick-fil-A has been a steadfast supporter of Levine Children’s. Whether funding our Child Life program—which provides one-on-one support to patients and families through music, play, art, and pet therapy—or paving the way for a much-needed renovation of the 12th floor rooftop play space, the team continues to enhance the patient experience. We are deeply grateful to everyone at Chick-fil-A for their commitment to our pediatric patients!
