About us
Founded in 1981, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) is a design studio whose practice spans the fields of architecture, urban design, installation art, multi-media performance, digital media, and print. With a focus on cultural and civic projects, DS+R’s work addresses the changing role of institutions and the future of cities. The studio is based in New York and is comprised of over 100 architects, designers, artists and researchers, led by four partners—Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin. DS+R's cross genre work has been distinguished with TIME’s "100 Most Influential People" list and the first grant awarded in the field of architecture from the MacArthur Foundation, which identified Diller and Scofidio as, “architects who have created an alternative form of architectural practice that unites design, performance, and electronic media with cultural and architectural theory and criticism. Their work explores how space functions in our culture and illustrates that architecture, when understood as the physical manifestation of social relationships, is everywhere, not just in buildings.”

The V&A East Storehouse, set to open to the public in May 2025, was featured in the Financial Times, in an article by Jan Dalley who writes, "[...] V&A’s Storehouse has a radical vision. Whether you call it working storage, open-access warehousing or redesigned display, according to Tim Reeve, deputy director and chief operating officer of the V&A, it 'sets a new paradigm for access to national collections.' The idea is a simple one: to make the greatest possible number of the museum’s 2.8mn objects available for the public to savour." To read the full article, visit https://lnkd.in/edMZakWg. The piece also appears in the January 18th print issue under the title "Behind the scenes at the museum."

DS+R has recently secured approval from the City of Madrid and local property owners to proceed with the final documentation for the Renazca masterplan—a renovation spanning eight city blocks of Azca. Renazca reimagines Azca’s 1970s deteriorated public spaces as an urban forest, integrating green infrastructure with water and waste reuse systems from nearby towers, and increasing the district's greenspace by 86%. This milestone follows a four-year collaboration with the city and local community to align with the aspirations of all stakeholders, and could not have been accomplished without Miguel Hernández of the Europe Urban Regeneration Council, who played a key role in uniting nearly 75 stakeholder groups. V&A Director Tristram Hunt recently wrote about the V&A East Storehouse for The Economist, in an article in which he discusses why museums have recently been "turning themselves inside out." He writes that DS+R's design for the Storehouse has "transformed what was once a vast, empty shed (originally built as the media centre for the 2012 London Olympics) into a sublime collections hall and self-guided public experience, allowing deep exploration of the hidden workings of a 21st-century museum." "The moments where the High Line really sings, even when there is no opera or street performance going on, is when it literally cuts through buildings. The cuts lead you into a cave where goods were once unloaded from the tracks inside the buildings they served, where graffiti remains, and where you can stop and rest. Then there is a moment where the wood planks veer off toward the east, step down, and form a small theater. Sit on the tiers and you find yourself watching the performance of cars whizzing by on Tenth Avenue below, in the never-ending automotive ballet of Manhattan." Dig deeper into the High Line, as well as The Mile-Long Opera, in an excerpt from Aaron Betsky's insightful new book "Don't Build, Rebuild: The case for Imaginative Reuse in Architecture." #HighLine #MileLongOpera #Architecture #UrbanDesign #UrbanSpace #ImaginativeReuse #UrbanRenewal https://lnkd.in/d3v876e3
