Today, July 26th, is Disability Independence Day! Disability Pride Month was officially recognized in 2015, marking the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The #ADA was a huge step forward in ensuring civil rights protections for folks with disabilities. While it's a time to celebrate, it’s also a reminder of the ongoing work needed to achieve full inclusion and equality. Despite the progress we've made so far, plenty of barriers still exist that prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in society. These can include physical barriers, like inaccessible buildings and transportation, as well as attitudinal barriers, like discrimination and misconceptions about disabilities. As an employer, here are some things you can do to make your workplace inclusive and accessible for all. 👇 #disabilitypride #disabilitypridemonth #disabilityindependence #ADA

Reasonable accommodations imply the existence of... well, UNreasonable accommodations. During Tuesday's webinar, Melanie Naranjo opened things up by asking Justine L. Abrams, Esq. of Ogletree Deakins a simple question: is #HR required to approve *every* accommodation request that comes across their desk? "There are 3 reasons why the answer to that question is no," says Justine. And one reason is that the accommodation request is unreasonable. 💡 In order for an accommodation to be considered reasonable, it must be: • Reasonable on its face: meaning doable, feasible, or plausible • Effective: meets the needs of the individual by providing them the help that their disability causes them to need #reasonableaccommodations #hrcommunity #humanresources

Do you think a company that uses words like "ethics" and "honest" is more likely to actually be ethical? It seems like the answer is, "no." Susan Frank Divers writes about the relationship between talking the talk and walking the walk for the Ethena blog. She shares a Journal of Business Ethics study that found a correlation between the use of “trust” words in companies’ securities filings and issues like higher audit fees and comment letters from the Securities and Exchange Commission. My blunt version is that companies that used good words were more likely to be doing bad. I puzzled on whether I thought this was surprising and came away with the conclusion that I don't think it is. When I was in the Army, I became skeptical of commanders who went on and on about their Open Door Policies. Often, these same commanders would then signal that they actually wanted to sweep issues under the rug. On the flip side, I noticed that commanders who spent little time on rhetoric and instead just did the quiet work of showing, through actions, their commitment to things like a speak up culture did indeed build a speak up culture. To the extent there's a takeaway, I think it's this: every time you find yourself working on messaging, ask yourself, "Have I spent an equal amount of time on action?" Communicating is really important, but only when coupled with action.

Yesterday was International Non-Binary People's Day. Let's talk about it! 👇 Around the world, July 14th is recognized as International Non-Binary People’s Day. It shines a light on those who identify as #nonbinary and celebrates the rich diversity of the community. 💡 WHAT DOES NON-BINARY MEAN? The term “non-binary” describes someone who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. Non-binary folks may identify with both masculine and feminine aspects, or they might fall completely outside these categories. Many non-binary people also identify as trans, though not all do. While societal norms often reinforce the notion that gender exists as a binary, we know there's so much more to it. Non-binary people show us every day that knowing yourself and your identity is a powerful thing that no one can strip away.
