About us

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in the area that is today South Sudan since the 1970s, on a periodic basis. GIZ’s coordination office has been located in the capital, Juba, since 2010. GIZ works on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in the following three priority areas: Food and nutrition security and rural development Urban water supply and sanitation Rural development and good governance. In the field of food and nutrition security, GIZ and its partners are working to combat undernourishment and malnutrition among children and women and raising awareness for health issues. The German Government is supporting local water utilities in four towns and cities in ensuring public drinking water supplies and sanitation, while making these services affordable and accessible even for low-income groups. GIZ is involved in developing water companies and is training staff to operate the plants. To improve hygienic conditions in schools, sanitary facilities are being extended and schoolchildren made aware of the importance of hygiene. To develop rural regions in the long term, GIZ is advising and supporting selected rural districts, allowing them to deliver services in a more direct and needs-based manner. The capacities of the rural authorities are being developed, while the population (especially women) are being encouraged to get involved in planning and shaping their immediate environments. The German Federal Foreign Office is also supporting the implementation of the 2015 peace deal through GIZ.
