Strong #healthsystems and #IPC practices are key for quality care, #patientsafety, preventing #HAIs and #AMR; and promoting occupational safety and health amongst healthcare workers.USAID Medicines, Technologies, and Pharmaceutical Services (MTaPS) Program work with the public sector, #privatesector and health professional associations to implement locally-led interventions has strengthened institutional & human resource capacities for #IPC and #antimicrobialstewardship to curb #AMR. Over 10,000 health practitioners have been reached in #Kenya. Similar locally-led approaches have been employed for strengthening #pharmacovigilance and safety surveillance working with the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board and The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK).
Local Expertise Drives #Kenya's Success in Combating: #AntimicrobialResistance: Kenya has achieved significant progress in addressing #AMR in hospitals, laboratories, and health facilities nationwide, thanks in part to the collective expertise of the country’s professional associations, which collaborated with the USAID Medicines, Technologies, and Pharmaceutical Services (MTaPS) Program on a pioneering infection prevention and control professional development program. This training initiative—endorsed by Ministry of Health, Kenya—has enhanced the #IPC skills of thousands of healthcare workers, resulting in a marked reduction in healthcare-associated infections. Key associations involved include: ➡ National Nurses Association of Kenya ➡ Kenya Clinical Officers Association ➡ Kenya Medical Laboratory Scientific Officers ➡ Kenya Pharmaceutical Association _ National Executive Council ➡ Kenya Society for Physiotherapists ➡ Kenya Medical Association ➡ The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) Learn more about the IPC training initiative: https://lnkd.in/gGTB_juA Learn more about our work in Kenya: https://lnkd.in/ePcKqNs7 #MSHinKenya #HealthForAll #localpartnerships #localization Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya Kenya Pharmaceutical Association_Nairobi Dr. Stephen Njuguna Waiguru Preston Ochieng Nadia Aliyan Grace Marete, MSc., MPSK Epa Twahirwa Dr Sofia Mohamed Evelyn Wesangula Prashant Mandaliya, MPharm, BPharm, MPSK Dr. Grace Ikahu-Muchangi Grace Kihika Ritah Akinyi Dr. Rose Jalang’o Lyndon Marani Henry Amdany Douglas Doyle Maureen Kamene Kimenye Peter Galgallo Arero Salim Oginga Dr.Helen Kiarie Sarah Odera Ngao Mbithi Nahashon Kipkoech Wanjiku Thandi Thaddeus Nyandika Jeremiah Mainah Dr. Anne Wawire Kabimba (PhD.) MSH at #AIDS2024: #LocalLeadership was the name of the game at Wednesday's satellite session, "Accelerating Local Leadership of Health System Functions as a Critical Pathway to Sustainability of the #HIV Response," moderated by MSH Vice Pres. Aday Adetosoye, PhD, MPH. Key highlights: ➡MSH's Sarah Konopka emphasized that high-quality, person-centered care requires a well-resourced, well-managed health system "led by local leaders within the context of their local systems" in partnership with community, civil society, private sector & faith-based leaders. ➡USAID's Ashley Frost echoed that sentiment, adding localization involves engaging government partners at all levels, domestic NGOs, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, for-profits, community groups & people living with or affected by HIV. "We want USAID investments to center around the inputs of all these parties," she said. ➡Brandeis University's A.K. Nandakumar lauded USAID's renewed emphasis on building local capacities to support broader healthcare changes, while noting, "MSH has had over five decades of experience doing exactly this." ➡MSH's Dr. Eric Lugada shared #Uganda's success with a "unified approach of government," supported by MSH, which brings key ministries together to collaborate on health sector improvements. This approach has led to the Ministry of Finance providing funding for essential medicines to the Ministry of Electrification prioritizing infrastructure improvements that keep the lights on at health facilities. "This approach defined unified action under a common cause," Lugada explained, "and that cause was health.” ➡#Ukraine's Olga Gvozdetska spoke of the support the Ministry of Health received after the Russian invasion to successfully decentralize HIV stock management & amend regulations to allow people to buy 3- and 6-months worth of treatments at a time. She thanked #PEPFAR and the The Global Fund for helping ensure the availability of HIV treatments throughout Ukraine. ➡Oanh Khuat of SCDI - Supporting Community Development Initiatives in Vietnam, noted that, while governments can change, civil society endures and remains, providing continuity to communities. In addressing sustainability, she said, "The private sector, the communities, the non-state actors need to be taken into account." ➡MSH Board Director Magda Robalo, President and Co-founder of the Institute for Global Health and Development, emphasized that public health leaders need to unlearn many behaviors, mindsets, and attitudes from the past two decades to achieve sustainability. “Most of what is needed to achieve sustainability lies outside the health sector,” she said, echoing Dr. Lugada’s remarks. A big MSH thank you to our panelists and audience who made this event such an important learning experience. Conference participants can access the video here: https://lnkd.in/ewufD3NA

🎉 Happy Independence Day, Liberia! Today, we join the nation in celebrating its rich history and resilient spirit!🎉 And we are thrilled to announce that MSH is returning to #Liberia to partner once again with the government and USAID on the Local Health Solutions (LHS) Activity. Through this initiative, we will collaborate with six local organizations—four women-led—to implement quality improvement and health systems strengthening interventions in targeted counties. This initiative will focus on: ➡ Strengthening decentralized health #governance ➡ Improving #supplychainmanagement at the subnational level ➡ Enhancing the quality of health services, including maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (#MNCH), #malaria services, and #laboratory and disease surveillance systems ➡ Increasing transparency and accountability of resources for improved service delivery ➡ Supporting local organizations to successfully implement donor-funded health activities “Our approach centers on local ownership from the outset, and this project will help our partners to make systemic changes at a new level, particularly in the areas of transparency and accountability,” said MSH President and CEO Marian Wentworth. MSH has a rich history in Liberia, having worked to rehabilitate the health system post-civil war and support the country during the 2014 Ebola epidemic. We are committed to contributing our technical knowledge and key relationships across the development sector to enhance the quality, availability, and affordability of health services in Liberia. MSH at #AIDS2024: While the global #HIV response has significantly enhanced prevention and service delivery, it has not sufficiently focused on strengthening health systems. As policymakers and donors increasingly embrace health systems strengthening, the pressing question is whether these transitions will place patients at the center and address the glaring health inequities faced by women, girls, and children. MSH Board Member Magda Robalo shared her thoughts with Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Pres. and CEO Chip Lyons during the #SatelliteSession, “Make it stronger: How health systems strengthening can improve equity for women and children.” "Children cannot take themselves to the health clinic, they cannot advocate for themselves – someone needs to do it for them. Children will not be taken care of if women are not reached," said Robalo. "By increasing our reach to women, by talking more to women, by looking for those who are still not coming for diagnostics and testing, we would be able to reach out to more children than we are doing." MSH at #AIDS2024: We appreciate the work of #journalists and believe they play a critical role in #publichealth. So we always make time to engage them. Here are MSH President and CEO, Marian Wentworth, and MSH Technical Director of Infectious Diseases and #HIV and #AIDS Lead Sarah Konopka at the International AIDS Conference 2024 with Anna Miti of #Zimbabwe's Broadcasting Corporation and Lorraine Mwanza of #Zambia's Media Science Cafe MESICA. Journalists ask: What role do international NGOs like MSH play in the fight against HIV? What are some of the behind-the-scenes efforts that make services possible? How does MSH help countries shore up their #supplychains and #pharmaceuticalsystems to ensure everyone, everywhere has access to the medicines and supplies they need to prevent and treat HIV? What are some of the biggest challenges we see, and opportunities for progress? As donor support dwindles, what role can NGOs like MSH play in helping countries adapt and transform their health systems so no one is left behind? Journalists translate our language—which can sometimes be too technical, sometimes too detailed—into something more accessible to the people who need to know—whether a community member, a stakeholder organization, or even a policy maker. What do you want to know? (L-R: anna miti, lorraine mwanza, Marian Wentworth, and Sarah Konopka) Internews Ida Jooste Ida Jooste
