Last year, the first UrbanShift National-Local Dialogue, held in Jakarta on August 29-30, marked a key milestone in advancing Indonesia's low-carbon urban future. With a focus on five core themes—Circular Economy, Water Management, Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Transport, and Urban Biodiversity—this event brought together city leaders, government agencies, and international organizations to drive impactful climate action. Indonesia's cities hold immense potential to lead the way in reducing emissions and meeting national climate goals. Through collaborative governance, innovative financing, and practical solutions, urban areas like Jakarta, Palembang, and Semarang are stepping up to the challenge. 🔗 Read the full blog by ICLEI's Karishma Asarpota and Saheel Ahmed to discover how Indonesia is transforming its urban landscapes: https://lnkd.in/eHenyx4v #UrbanShift #SustainableCities #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #UrbanBiodiversity #EnergyEfficiency #ICLEI #Indonesia

💡 Day one of the CFO Convening on Clean Transport Finance is off to a rousing start following opening remarks from Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s Douglas Annoful (Metropolitan Coordinating Director) and Abeeku Nyarko (Metro Finance Director). The Convening is a unique collaboration between the Global Environment Facility-funded and UN Environment Programme-led UrbanShift’s Clean Transport Finance Academies, and the CFO Network for African Cities (implemented by C40 Cities and Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM)) that will foster collaborative dialogue on implementable finance solutions for inclusive, transformational transport projects in African cities. Douglas Annoful addressing the assembled senior finance and transport officials from 11 major cities across the African continent, underscored the importance of climate being prioritised in all city departments. Looking forward to subsequent days of the event, where cities will be joined by national governments and financial institutions, Abeeku Nyarko made a call for stronger partnerships and collaboration to achieve what should be shared goals for all - making our cities more sustainable, resilient and livable for all. In order to reach this goal, cities need to shift to transport systems that are as close as possible to zero-emission, efficient and equitable. A well considered and delivered, integrated public and active transport network can be the heart of a city, the channels by which citizens and guests flow from the different meaningful people and places in their lives. However finance remains a key barrier for most cities across the continent to reshape and improve their transport infrastructure and systems. Over the course of the 3 day event cities will have the opportunity to participate in an interactive Climate Fresk workshop, learn directly from peer city case studies, discuss creditworthiness with ratings agencies and dig into their own priority transport projects with potential financiers and finance experts. 🌍 As China’s cities grow rapidly, balancing urban development with sustainability has become a top priority. The first #UrbanShift National-Local Dialogue in China, led by ICLEI East Asia Secretariat, brought together national and local leaders, NGOs, and global organizations to tackle these challenges. Held virtually on 16 November 2022, the dialogue focused on integrating biodiversity protection and low-carbon development into urban planning 👉 https://lnkd.in/ekWmmYWF Key takeaways included aligning local strategies with China’s carbon neutrality goals, leveraging innovative financing for green projects, and building resilient, climate-friendly cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, and Ningbo. With the next dialogue set for October 2024 in Wuhan, we look forward to continuing this critical conversation. We're excited to share an insightful new article by C40 Cities, highlighting "How cities can attract private finance for climate action"! 🌱💼 👉 Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gxfCMitU 🎯At CFF, our mission is clear: help cities prepare and implement urban infrastructure projects that make a large-scale impact on residents' lives. Because securing finance can be the toughest step for projects, we support cities reach financial-readiness and design the right finance solutions. 💪 🚴♀️For example, for Bogotá CFF support was instrumental in developing their requirements for a bikesharing system, analyzing different funding options, developing the innovative “Scheme for the economic use of public space”, and structuring the PPP-arrangement with a private operator. The system, which integrated many gender equality and disability inclusion measures, launched in September 2022 and now covers 27 square kilometers with 3,000 bikes! A true win for sustainable urban mobility. 🌍 🔥 So much more is possible when cities can mobilize finance from city budgets, national governments, development banks, and the private sector! Let's discuss — How are you leveraging finance for sustainable projects in your city? 💬💡 The CFF is supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Agence Française de Développement, and USAID 📸 Credits: Secretaría Distrital de Movilidad de Bogotá

A more comprehensive perspective on urban climate resilience is a top priority for urban urgencies such as flood mitigation. Facilitated by UrbanShift and World Resources Institute at the Floating Office in Rotterdam, Anne Loes Nillesen was one of the presenters at Peer-to-Peer Exchange for Latin American cities, together with Nanco Dolman, Arnoud Molenaar and Johan Verlinde. Supported by Gemeente Rotterdam and Global Center on Adaptation, the dialogue among representatives brought integrative and thoughtful approaches for enhancing resilience and building healthier, more connected communities.
