In am a proud son of a woman in STEM. Celebrate Today reach out. She was a young, recently-divorced, new mom. She started as entry-level operator for AT&T in Providence (a woman’s job 🙄 then) in the 1960’s and remarried in the ERA-era. Over 25 years she rose to Managment/executive-responsibility overseeing 100’s of telecom/civil engineers and tradesmen (man’s job). I recall anger, arguments, tears, anxiety, and self-doubt that she carried home from work. She tells my 2 STEM-path daughters, “ the belittlement (getting coffee for male peers), sex jokes, social exclusion by peers/subordinates from bonding activities (golf, bars), and the more insidious, passive- aggressive mananegment by superior men. To make me want to quit ONLY drove her to outwork and outlast”. Much progress, but there are still bias and culture influences that cause young women to drift from STEM. When they enter high school. Please support, train, and do frequent 360 check-ins with new woman employees. Especially, non-STEM woman entering innovation-driven, STEM businesses. They may grow into your company’s best “Managers of the Engineers”. #innovation #engineers

Shira Springer put it best: as the NIL marketplace continues to evolve, everyone involved needs to consistently ask and find answers to the question of how can we ensure an equitable NIL experience for all. https://lnkd.in/eAgNzrnT Women athletes expect half of what men athletes do, given the same deal. So if those expectations are reality, women have to obtain and manage 2-3x the number of deals as men. And then execute on those deals. Time isn’t exactly in abundance for any college student, let alone a student-athlete… There are opportunities to close to gaps; we need the evaluative research to understand where the gaps lie and understand the best ways to close them. I have my own takes on how this should start to happen… so let’s chat if you’re interested. Any student-athlete, AD administrator, or NIL exec. Thank you, Shira, for featuring my research in your column. Your writing resonates with me and I hope it does with decision-makers in the NIL space. And thank you Chris Rider for your research guidance. The inspiration for this research was sparked during your inaugural Equity Analytics class and it’s really cool to see it make its way to SBJ.
NIL gender pay gap is real, but doesn’t have to be the norm

Today's lesson in media manipulation and failing to tell the entire story because of political agendas. The Central Bucks School District in PA this week installed their new Board members. The first link here is the coverage story from the local Philadelphia FOX affiliate, Channel 29. Read the story. While it seems to be "balanced", it's not. As covered by other Philly area media, the nuanced and actually newsworthy part of the story is how the new School Board President was sworn into office. Instead of just using a Bible or any other "standard" item, she took her oath on a stack of books that have been frequently banned from schools by members of the far Right wing. The second link here is the Philadelphia Inquirer story focusing on that facet of the story. The swearing in of a School Board is minor news. The symbolic gesture of the new President is THE story. However, because it smacks in the face of right wing politics, and thus would not be endearing to the demographic which favors FOX News national and regional coverage, FOX 29 decided not to cover the main point of the story. While not propaganda in the truest sense of the word, the omission of this part of the story shows a decided editorial bias by FOX 29. They decided here, due to the political bend of their audience, to NOT serve the entire viewership and omit a salient part of the story. Whether Right or Left, the job of local news, or at least it used to be, is to cover the ENTIRE story without favor. FOX 29 decided not to piss off their Right wing audience. Granted, they are not the only outlet doing this, as plenty of Left leaning local news outlets also hide and shuffle the real news in order to not piss off the biased portion of their viewers. This is why it is imperative that you, everyone, get your news from numerous sources. NEVER rely on one outlet. DO your research. READ from other sources and THEN balance out the real news from the nonsense. STOP blaming "the media" for their mess we're in, and start taking responsibility. Hold these outlets accountable. Shy away from those who shade the news, keeping in mind my lessons on the difference between reporting the news and opinion shows. There is no shock about the lack of total coverage in this instance emanating from a FOX outlet. But don't think for a moment they are the only guilty parties. YOU are the line between what is real news and what is bias and propaganda. Stop blaming someone else. It's not difficult at all. #newsmedia #broadcast #fakenews #realnews #localnews #propaganda #networknews #socialmedia #FOX #leftwing #rightwing #bias #television #podcasts https://lnkd.in/ezp3UmhU https://lnkd.in/eRXYGiJv

The Historical Context of Media Bias This post isn’t meant to alienate anyone, but it’s the only way I know how to approach controversial matters–with the facts! There’s a ton of media hype about LBJ’s massive contract deal and Benny's controversial contract. So let’s bring some clear perspective to the matter. The media has a long history of biased coverage when it comes to Black athletes and public figures. This bias often manifests in how their achievements and the circumstances surrounding their success are portrayed. The intense scrutiny and sometimes negative undertones in the coverage of LeBron and Bronny James can be seen as an extension of this historical bias, where the accomplishments of Black individuals are often questioned or diminished compared to their white counterparts. Scrutiny and Double Standards LeBron James and his family are subjected to a level of scrutiny that is often not applied to white athletes and their families. When white athletes' children follow in their footsteps, it is typically celebrated as a continuation of a legacy. In contrast, the narrative around LeBron and Bronny includes insinuations of nepotism and unfair advantages, reflecting a double standard rooted in racial bias. Undermining Achievements There is a tendency in the media to undermine the achievements of Black individuals by attributing their success to external factors rather than their own merit and hard work. In the case of Bronny James, the media’s focus on LeBron’s influence rather than Bronny’s skills and potential as a player can diminish Bronny’s accomplishments and perpetuate stereotypes about Black individuals needing extra help to succeed. Sensationalism and Stereotyping The media often sensationalizes stories involving Black athletes, emphasizing controversy and drama. This approach reinforces negative stereotypes and diverts attention from their positive contributions and achievements. By focusing on potential nepotism and creating a narrative of controversy around Bronny’s draft, the media perpetuates harmful stereotypes rather than celebrating the positive aspects of their story. Impact of Racism on Perception Racial bias in media coverage affects public perception, reinforcing societal prejudices. The way the LeBron and Bronny’s story is framed can influence how the public views their achievements, potentially fostering negative attitudes and reinforcing racial stereotypes. This biased coverage can have broader implications for how Black success is perceived and valued in society. Conclusion The media’s focus on LeBron James and his son Bronny is also rooted in longstanding racial biases that shape how Black individuals and their achievements are portrayed. By scrutinizing their story through a lens of nepotism and controversy, the media perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines the genuine accomplishments of both LeBron and Bronny James. #mediabias #thoughtleadership
