Climate change extreme cold hit the wine industry in the B.C. Okanagan Valley last winter. It essentially killed most of the red grapes in the valley. How do we make the winery and other agricultural producers more resilient to extreme climate? Innovation adoption is key in this industry to drive climate smart agriculture and create value adding industries that help foster new technology investments and sustainable jobs. I will be attending International Forum on Biotechnology and Bioeconomy in Bologna Italy Oct 3-4th and participate in a panel discussion with Italian and European colleagues on the importance value chains from Agriculture to Industries.

🌍 The PrAEctiCe project, in which our GeMMA laboratory participates, is paving the way for environmentally friendly agri-food systems in East Africa! Funded under the Horizon Europe program, the project aims to encourage the transition to agroecological practices by leveraging advanced technology and innovation to support smallholder farmers. Our goal is to improve food security, strengthen agricultural resilience, and promote the sustainable use of resources such as energy, water, and nutrients. 💡 As part of the project, we are developing digital decision support tools that will: - Provide tailored advice and data for farmers and advisors. - Integrate modern technologies such as mobile applications, sensors, and data collection platforms. - Ensure access to useful information even for those with limited digital resources via SMS and other solutions. 📢 At the recent PrAEctiCe Agroecology Summit, the head of our laboratory, Prof. Dr. Domen Mongus, presented advanced solutions to accelerate the transition to agroecology using digital tools. 🧐 Why does this matter? By bringing together researchers, farmers, and industry stakeholders, we are bridging the gap between traditional practices and modern technology, contributing to sustainable development in Africa and beyond.
