📨 Together with other civil society organisations, we’ve sent an open letter to the Ukraine Facility’s trialogue negotiators calling for an inclusive, sustainable and environmentally sound reconstruction of #Ukraine! 💸 The Ukraine Facility is a EUR 50 billion reconstruction fund for Ukraine. The EU regulation that will determine how the fund operates is due to be voted on by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union in February. Ahead of the decision to adopt the regulation, we urge the negotiators to maintain and, where possible, strengthen amendments on: 🤝 the transparent and meaningful participation of civil society in processes related to Ukraine’s reconstruction; 🌳 environmental safeguards and principles. The Ukraine Facility Regulation is crucial if Ukraine is to recover from the devastating effects of the war. Let’s make sure it’s rooted in green and inclusive principles! The Ukrainian government recently unveiled its Ukraine Plan, a key component of the EU’s 2024-2027 Ukraine Facility, which aims for a sustainable recovery with a EUR 50 billion financial boost. Key steps include commitments to low-carbon, circular, and nature-friendly reconstruction. But there's still room for improvement. To deliver on its promises, the plan must ensure: 🤝 Meaningful stakeholder engagement 💰 Allocation of funds to sub-national authorities ⚠ Do no significant harm and leave no one behind principles 🌿 At least 20% of the budget for climate, environmental and green transition measures Read our new blog by Mariia Bielkina, Ecoaction - Centre for Environmental Initiatives 🇺🇦, to learn more about the environmental and social aspects of the plan and its potential impact on Ukraine’s future: https://lnkd.in/dCZx9Vjm

Special Advisor with focus on spatial protection, ecosystem restoration and biodiversity at HELCOM - Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission
"The results of the #thirdholisticassessment of the #BalticSea shows, unequivocally, that at the core of the poor status across the Baltic Sea ecosystem there is one common denominator: us. Human activities are occurring at a number and an intensity beyond what the ecosystem can tolerate and while the sea might know no borders it does have boundaries. There are no unending resources, no continuous growth. When we use more than the ecosystem can provide we take the overdraft from the next generation. This is no imaginary debt, it is a very concrete one, and we can see the consequences of it in in every result in the assessment. The situation we are facing is not something that happened to us, it is something we did, and continue doing. It does, however, come with a very concrete silver lining. When we know that our activities are the problem, it means we have the power to change it. And the assessment shows that, when implemented, measures work. We are currently facing the consequences of the actions of those that came before us, and it is no easy thing. But what about our legacy? What will we hand over to our own children? Because our failings inevitably become our children’s reality. The first step to fixing a problem is understanding what causes it. We know that now. And the second is to fix it. And that is why we are here." A week ago I had the great honour of addressing the Ministers for the Environment, high level representatives and ambassadors from around the Baltic Sea at the Baltic Sea Minister Meeting in Riga, Latvia, sharing the results of #HOLAS3 and what they mean for society's relationship with our shared sea.
