Understanding the intricacies of sound transmission in mass timber construction is crucial for architects, engineers, and construction professionals. The overall sound transmission between rooms depends on multiple transmission paths: direct, indirect, and flanking transmission. In the flanking sound paths, vibrational energy is transmitted from one building element to another via their common junction. Mass timber construction, while offering unique architectural possibilities, also presents distinct challenges regarding sound transmission. The desire to maintain the aesthetic of exposed wood, coupled with the inherent lightness of this construction type, significantly amplifies the importance of flanking transmission paths. The vibration reduction index, Kij, can be calculated using ISO standards and expresses the attenuation of the vibrational power flow through a junction, playing a pivotal role in sound isolation. It can also be measured in both lab and in-situ and CDM Stravitec has noticed significant differences between the calculations based on the standards versus the measured Kij values. Moreover, while acoustical decoupling is necessary to avoid transmission over the flanking paths, it is vital to remember that the structural design of the connections must be guaranteed, and a balance between structural and acoustic requirements is necessary. Our angle brackets are subjected to mechanical tests to guarantee structural stability and reliability while providing the desired acoustic and vibration decoupling performance. Are you curious about the acoustical hurdles in mass timber construction and how flanking transmissions can be reduced? Swing by booth 995 of CDM Stravitec at the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland on March 26-28. For a deeper understanding of the findings from our on-site test campaign, we invite you to access a copy of our white paper on this matter: https://lnkd.in/gBng6YVt Let's dive into the discussion together. #acoustics #soundinsulation #cdmstravitec #straviwood #clt #quietbuildings #noiseandvibration #comfort #acoustics #proudengineering #architecture #ThinkDifferent #IMTC2024 #InternationalMassTimberConference #CLTconstruction #modular #flanking

The RESED group from the Eindhoven University of Technology, led by Arjan Habraken, works on projects related to Resource Efficient Structural Engineering and Design. Today, RESED is presenting the design thesis of Luuk Kassing. In his project a circular radially retractable roof is designed by means of a parametric design process (see: https://lnkd.in/eXF7C5Uc). “The radially retractable roof will be exposed to changing wind loads, which is difficult to predict for all configurations. The Eurocode gives guidelines for relatively common situations, but the retractable roof cannot be represented by only one of these cases. Furthermore, stadium roofs with circular central openings are not included in the Eurocodes. Therefore, wind load predictions are approximated using three situations: a combination of the closed dome situation from the Eurocode between 0% and 5% opening ratios and the research findings of Cheon et al. (2021) in external wind pressure coefficients for 30% as well as 50% opening ratios, as visualized in the graph. For configurations in between these prescribed situations, interpolation is used with the three situations as a basis. Beyond the 50% configuration, the configuration is predicted by further extrapolation.” #Parametric #design #Retractable #roof #Grasshopper #Rhinoceros #Structural #digitaldesign

That’s a wrap, 2023! 🎉 This year, we celebrated the best of architecture with our internationally-recognised RIBA Awards programme. Presented for over 50 years, our awards champion people and buildings which have had a significant influence on the advancement of architecture. There were over 10 inspiring project categories - including the inaugural Reinvention Award, a new award which champions the creative transformation of an existing building. We also awarded our Stephen Lawrence Prize to an early career architect for the very first time, and Yasmeen Lari became the second woman to receive the Royal Gold Medal. 👏 Congratulations again to our 2023 winners and thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate – including the Chair of our Awards Group Denise Bennetts, and our sponsors Gaggenau, EH Smith Architectural Solutions, Autodesk, Forterra PLC, Arper and Ibstock Plc. ➡️ Discover this year's winners: https://ow.ly/UTnc50QkzlP #RIBAawards

Technical Designer at Jora Vision | Masterstudent 'Architecture, Building & Planning; track Structural Engineering and Design' aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
Hi all! Currently, I am working on my Graduation Project as part of my master 'Architecture, Building and Planning; track Structural Engineering and Design'. The design objective of this project is to follow "a parametric design process towards a circular radially retractable roof by detailed structural analyses and optimizations". I thought it would be interesting to give updates on the progress of my Graduation Project. In this second post, I discuss the method used to predict the wind loads in all possible configurations.
𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 💪🏻 In the dynamic world of structural engineering, moment frame systems stand tall as versatile solutions for resisting lateral loads in buildings. ❓️ What are Moment Frames??? Moment frames are comprised of vertical columns and horizontal beams interconnected to form rigid frames. These frames effectively combat lateral forces such as wind and seismic activity, ensuring the stability and safety of tall structures. 📈 The Benefits: • Stability: Moment frames provide robust resistance against bending moments induced by lateral loads, offering reliable stability to buildings in challenging environments. • Flexibility: Unlike traditional shear walls or braced frames, moment frame systems offer more flexibility in floor plan design, allowing for open and customizable spaces that meet modern architectural demands. • Ductility: With their superior ductility and energy dissipation capabilities, moment frame systems excel in regions prone to seismic activity, providing enhanced safety and resilience. ❓️ Why Moment Frames? Their versatility allows for flexible and open floor plans, fostering architectural creativity while ensuring structural resilience. From sleek skyscrapers to robust industrial complexes, moment frame systems offer a reliable solution for a wide range of projects. In general the future of low-rise buildings is always with moment frame systems. PFA ETABS Model of General Moment Frame Snap for your referance.
