With 'National Workplace Wellbeing Day' in mind - the idea of combining carbon sequestration, promoting biodiversity, increasing the nutrient-density of our food, and reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides seems like a logical step in the right direction.

Land has a visceral power. There is an alchemy in the ability of minerals, microbes, and organic matter to transform into food, clothing, and shelter. While less than 2% of Americans are farmers, we all participate in this magic every time we eat or wear a sweater or sleep under a roof. But the soil that makes this possible is under threat. Oregon’s amazing land use program has slowed the sprawl onto this nonrenewable resource for 50 years, but we’ve still paved tens of thousands of acres - including much of our best soils. Between 2017-2022, Oregon lost 660,000 acres, about 4% of its ag land. We had a question posed of us - how can Earth Gives Day help us reach a broader audience than our current circle? We gave an answer, but we also dug deeper, did research into the group and shared more ideas specific to their unique organization. Which leads us to this thought - if your nonprofit working in #agriculture #climate #water #farming #environment #landtrust #wildlife #climatejustice is a group with affiliates, with districts, chapters, or grassroots groups you fund - you all have a unique ability to register for Earth Gives Day and then have a handful or more of those groups add on to your profile as a "fundraiser". It would take them about 5-10 mins. It helps you all reach out further and farther from your own circle. That's the point of Earth Gives - a louder linked voice for this mission work in the nonprofit world. Funding is just 2% for this issue compared to all others. Can you change that on your own? Worms! 🪱 Could these slimy creatures be the winning solution to a problem? Potentially. Ten of our team are competing in this year’s Winnovators, a global competition run by the not-for-profit WaterAid . The competition has two parts - to raise money for WaterAid and come up with a solution to this year’s problem 👉 the need for improved sanitation in Papua New Guinea’s coastal communities. The team has started strong with their fundraising thanks to a sausage sizzle and a trivia night, with the aim of raising a whopping $10,000 for WaterAid. Now, back to the worms. Homes in Papua New Guinea are built on stilts over the ocean and toilets empty directly into the sea. The team is looking at ways to capture and treat waste in an innovative way. Their idea uses worms to break down waste, turning it into organic compost and recycled water. They chose this challenge 'cos they can help the community and the environment at the same time. Last year’s team ended up taking out the winning spot.
