You can't just throw a load of decarbonisation ideas at the wall and hope some stick - you need a plan! This snippet from a recent Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group discussion on decarbonisation is so true and emphasises the importance of the early work of developing the decarb strategy. I've worked on lots of strategic decarbonisation projects in the last 20 years and helping people break out of the "if we have a programme of retrofit between now and 2040, we'll be fine" to a place where they consider a more holistic set of questions is a critical part of the process. For example, how will we leverage: - Planned refurbishments - Repurposing of individual areas within buildings - Planned maintenance activity - and, as Zoe Roberts says, equipment failures. So that they are all to be positive contributors to the overall decarbonisation goal. None of these are especially easy questions to answer, but that's exactly why you need to think about them in advance. Doing that thinking is the job of the team developing the decarbonisation strategy and should be built on effective collaboration between all those who will be involved in implementing it. Of course, there are lots of other things your strategy should be doing too, but this is definitely one of them! #decarbonisation #netzero #nzcstrategy #carbonclarity

Decarbonization plans and roadmaps should be adaptable with event triggers in place to bring forward change at opportune times: "One of the worst things we can see happen is an emergency equipment failure with no plan in place. The equipment gets replaced like-for-like with its fossil fuel equivalent and then you're in the same position for another 15-20 years.
