Airbnb is proud to be a sponsor for the upcoming Asia Pacific Cities Summit to be held in Brisbane, Australia from October 11 - 13, 2023. Cities have an important place in all our lives. When the pandemic started, cities hollowed out as people tried to find solace and safety in less crowded places. And the abilities to work from anywhere also encouraged more people to explore new lifestyles like "workation", "bleisure" and digital nomadism. With the pandemic now firmly behind us, people are coming back to the cities. But our expectations have changed. Our lifestyles have changed. So how should we think about the ways we plan and run our cities? I will be sharing some insights we have gleaned from looking at the ways our communities have lived, worked and played on Airbnb. Come join me as we build back our cities better. The collaboration between UNWTO and WINTA has paved the way for community development, human rights principles, and the preservation of indigenous cultural expressions. In response to the challenges posed by COVID-19, both organizations sought to compile success stories and address the development issues faced by indigenous communities. In their book “Compendium of Good Practices in Indigenous Tourism – Regional Focus on the Americas” the focus is on the remarkable practices found in Latin America, a region undergoing significant socioeconomic and cultural transformations. The case studies presented in this compendium shed light on various dynamics, solutions, and ongoing challenges faced by key players in indigenous tourism. They encompass cultural interactions, intercultural dialogue, public policies, leadership promotion, safeguarding ancestral knowledge, community-centered experiences and more. With a diverse range of countries represented, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, Panama, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, we celebrate the unique realities of indigenous communities worldwide. By sharing these stories, UNWTO and WINTA aim to inspire sustainable practices, foster intercultural understanding, and create meaningful tourism experiences that respect indigenous cultures. Brazil appointed a dedicated minister for Indigenous peoples! 🥳 It highlights Brazil’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of Indigenous communities. 🇧🇷 By appointing a minister to safeguard their rights, Brazil ensures that their voices are heard and respected. 💚 Unfortunately, in many places worldwide, indigenous peoples still lack official recognition and respect. Take Australia, for instance, where they are currently in the process of deciding whether to constitutionally acknowledge the Aboriginals. (About time, I’d say). 🇦🇺🙏 Alongside Brazil, several other countries are setting commendable examples by acknowledging and respecting their indigenous communities: 🇨🇦 Canada recognizes the rights of First Nation, Inuit, and Métis peoples. 🇳🇿 New Zealand respects the cultural significance of the Māori. 🇳🇴 Nordic countries pay due respect to the Sámi people. Did you know indigenous communities play a central role in sustainable tourism development? Beyond contributing to economic growth and community empowerment, they are key in preserving cultural heritage. 🐲 Indigenous communities possess distinctive cultures, traditions, languages, and knowledge systems that have been passed down through generations. Sustainable tourism provides these communities with a platform to showcase and safeguard their cultural heritage, fostering a sense of pride among their members and promoting cultural diversity. It’s truly an amazing experience for travellers to learn more about such a rich culture. 🙌 Within your travel business, do you offer experiences that involve visits to indigenous communities? If so, what guidelines do you adhere to, and how do you ensure the protection of their rights? Please share your insights and practices! 💭 [Full article https://lnkd.in/epmMqkur] // #goodtourism #futureoftourism #sustainabletravel #travelbusiness #indigenouscommunity #indigenouspeoples #localimpact #responsibletravel

I've loved so many things about Catalonia, and learnt so much from embracing all that this region offers. I understand/appreciate its fight for independence, proud acknowledgment of its language, it's own special celebrations and traditions. One of many is how they choose to spend their tourism tax . Here it is put to good use, when doing my thesis research, I learnt about the many social aspects they invest this money in for the community first (and then visitors to enjoy). So many nationalities, and diverse cultures here, levels of income is so varied, so the city tries to be is inclusive, maybe this doesn't put food on the table, or pay the bills. But they invest in all types of events - ensuring everyone has access to enjoyment all year round, we have to remember that enjoyment is ok, it's important for wellbeing and the soul. Here they put on so many events that are 100 % free for everyone to enjoy. Art/culture/music so no one is excluded. Every first Sunday of the month, free entry into museums and galleries for locals. In these times where we are surrounded with doom, we need to smile, and we all need to remember to feel alive, be part of something, a sense of place and belonging, escape once in a while to build up strength, socialise, share ideas, and believe there is hope. 🤩 Social event impacts are powerful, they are transformational, and an excellent tool for learning on all levels. This photo was taken in balmes before a free concert was going to happen, full stage and set. All around Catalonia there are events, all the time, all year round, bringing communities together to celebrate nothing, but just about being present and together, and inclusive. (Note ; The Tourism tax is also invested in various infrastructure projects around the city to enhance the wellbeing of the community from the impacts of tourism, and the climate Emergancy). #socialimpact #socialinclusivity #positivetourism #transformation #impact
