Day 3 at Indaba was enlightening! Attended a thought-provoking conference session on academic improvements needed in African universities to support technological and sustainable leapfrogging in Africa. One key takeaway: To excel as a mining engineer, emphasis on soft skills is crucial. Moreover, making the mining industry attractive through entrepreneurship initiatives akin to the IT domain can help attract talent. Experience is also paramount for new graduates, underscoring the need for expanded mining engineering programs. Our latest exploration results from the West Arunta Project in Western Australia continue to excite, with shallow, high-grade intercepts extending Luni to the east ✅ Our Managing Director Paul Savich notes: "Today’s results are the final 2023 extensional drilling intersections and they suggest a meaningful envelope of mineralisation may continue in the eastern and southeastern area of Luni. This also provides an opportunity to extend Luni’s mineralised footprint during 2024." One particularly interesting result is from hole LURC23-093, which uncovered significant high-grade rare earth mineralisation (7m at 10% TREO from 58m) in the southeast of the Luni carbonatite. This discovery underscores the potential for additional commodities at Luni and highlights the ongoing opportunities for exploration and discovery. Industrial Sociologist working in Higher Education| Master's Student I Emerging Researcher| Consultant| YALI RLC-SA Alumni
This morning, I unexpectedly crossed paths with Minister Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy. Our chance encounter at Mike's Heritage House led to a valuable dialogue where I shared insights from my Master's research on the working conditions of women in South Africa's platinum mines. Minister Mantashe's vast experience and knowledge on the mining industry, coupled with discussions on the 2018 Mining Charter and its upcoming review in 2024, highlighted the vital connection between academic research and policymaking. Our exchange emphasized the significance of understanding the challenges faced by female miners and the mining sector as a whole. Our interaction showcased the symbiotic relationship between scholarly investigations and government actions, reinforcing the collaborative efforts needed to address the complexities within the mining industry. Integrating academic research with policy discussions is crucial for driving positive change and enhancing the well-being of those working in the sector. This encounter exemplified how academic endeavors can influence and be influenced by governmental policies, illustrating the transformative power of combining research insights with real-world perspectives. His parting words: "ensure that you read my Masters research report, I did it with Wits you know? There are issues mentioned there which still persists today and can be further researched." #WomenInMiningResearch #WomenInMining #WIM #MineralResources #WorkingConditions #MaleDominatedSpaces #GenderEquality #SDG5 #MastersResearch #Postgraduate

Imagining a future after mining This is the aim of the workshop held at the University of Limpopo. This workshop brings to a close the TReMA project on the treatment of mine water for agriculture, funded by F'SAGRI and BRGM (French Geological Survey), and led by the University of Limpopo, UPEC (Université Paris Est Créteil) and BRGM. The workshop is also an opportunity to discuss the way forward and future broader projects on mine rehabilitation in the Southern African region using a holistic approach. This is why this workshop involves strategic players: universities (University of Limpopo, UNISA, University of Cape Town and UPEC), MinTek (South Africa's national mining research organisation), AFD (Agence Française de Développement), the French Embassy, the DBSA.
