If your eCommerce business is growing, it is certainly possible to find a candidate with strong strategic and hands on execution experience. And this profile is key when you are looking to scale your eCommerce sales and expand into other marketplaces. Someone who has not just pulled the levers in Amazon or on a D2C eCommerce site, but knows which order to do so to scale. But please keep this in mind.... The more senior and tenured experience you target, they are likely less inclined to be hands on keyboard. If you target SVP or chief officer level talent, they will come in and BUILD your team. They probably aren't running paid campaigns in Amazon and optimizing product listings. You want a bit of both worlds on strategy and execution? Look for Director and VP level candidates a bit more junior who have helped scale eCommerce businesses. For all of the “hacks” you read about ecom strategy, most industry vets know that success really comes down to getting two things right... Product and people. Without a quality product and top-notch team as your foundation, you’re simply not going to survive. Going a step further, most leaders who are on the hook for scaling the ecom channel have very little control over the quality of their product, meaning team selection (in-house and partner) is often the MOST critical thing that any leader can focus on. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, ecommerce employment grew more than any other retail vertical over the past 15 years, creating 178,000 new jobs. That’s a heck of a lot of hiring decisions being made. If you add that to the number of agency and accelerator partner contracts that have been signed over the last 15 years, there have been a ton of opportunities for leaders to make the right or wrong selections. Brands who study those decisions and become skilled at selecting the right in-house folks and partners will see continued growth. Those who don’t will struggle.
