According to data from Dash Hudson, indie makeup brands are outpacing the total beauty industry in terms of engagement rate and follower growth on TikTok, averaging 4.4 percent by engagement and 25.5 percent by year-to-date follower growth. Today on my Substack: What happens when celebrities don't wear makeup? You get a magazine cover, a skincare line, or, now in Pamela Anderson's case, a fashion campaign. Months after making headlines for attending Paris Fashion Week without makeup, Anderson is now the star of Proenza Schouler's Spring/Summer 2024 campaign. It's a good get for Anderson and Proenza Schouler, which is aiming to regain its peak form after falling out of favor in the late 2010s. A makeup-free Pamela Anderson makes a great ally in that quest: according to data from Launchmetrics, Anderson's makeup-free fashion week jaunt generated $9.3 million in Market Impact Value. Celebrities have been using makeup-free photoshoots as a way to generate buzz for over a decade now, with female celebrities usually deemed "brave" or "inspirational" for showing their "natural" skin. But is it really brave when forgoing makeup is a sure way to raise your profile and scoop up brand endorsements?

I’ll tell you the obvious. When you listen to your consumer, this is what happens: Golloria is a makeup content creator, and she’s obviously not the target market for any beauty brand because… duh. But she is tough, has a sense of humor and tests a lot of trending products from makeup brands on her skin to see if they are truly inclusive for all skin tones. As you can see, she tested the new trending Rhode blushes, the brand by Hailey Bieber – the Gen Z It Girl. And it didn’t go well. It’s still common to see many makeup products perform poorly on darker skin tones, even today, if you can believe that. But Golloria isn’t just here for fun. She’s here to advocate. And she did. And Rhode? They listened. The first video was uploaded on TikTok on 08/05, and Rhode’s response (as you see in the video) came by the end of August. They came up with a new version of the blushes and two brand-new colors specifically for darker skin tones. In just one day, Golloria’s video had 2 million views. Rhode is now seen as a brand that listens to its consumers and cares about their opinions and experiences with the products. Rhode is now a reference, a diverse brand, and even more popular among Gen Z makeup lovers. They made a mistake, and they were quick to fix it – without excuses and without arrogance. Rhode is probably going to be an even more profitable brand because they did the obvious. Why? Like it’s hard?
