This morning our Deputy Chair Julia Prescot was on the opening panel of the @Water Report and Indepen #SocialContractSummit "on what water problems do we need to solve". One of the problems she said was ensuring England's #water infrastructure up to 2050 and beyond can respond to the twin challenges of a growing population and the impacts of #climatechange - i.e increased risk of dought, which necessitated the need to generate 4bn litres of additional water supply a day in England by 2050. Building new supply #infrastructure - along with tackling leaks and reducing demand - was one of the three key routes to solving this long term challenge facing the sector. With significant new infrastructure needing to be built - reservoirs, transfer networks - this required a #regulatory system that functions in a way that encourages investment into the sector when it's needed, but also ensures due attention is given to improving the #resilience and #maintenance of the system as a whole. Attracting investors into the market in the face of competition from attractive markets like the US also means addressing issues likely to give investors pause, such as the current slow pace of the #planning system for major infrastructure. The need for reform of the regulatory environment to drive the right behaviours from companies and investors on issues like #resilience and protecting the natural environment was the focus of much of the discussion with fellow panellists Colin Skellet of Wessex Water, River Action's James Wallace and Lila Thompson of British Water. As too was the importance of the need to rebuild the public's dented confidence in the #water sector and increase the #transparency of both how the sector operates and the costs associated with future-proofing our water system. To familiarise yourself with our recommendations on #water and #resilience in our 2nd National Infrastructure Assessment, visit the #NIA2 page on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eUsUEhCJ

Wessex Water chief executive Colin Skellett outlines the problems facing Britain’s under-fire water sector – and what the industry should be doing next The UK's National Infrastructure Commission has concluded that we need significantly more investment in new water resources, sewers and mains. The current run rate of infrastructure replacement assumes an implied asset life for water mains of 400 years and sewers of 800 years. At the moment the public, the press and therefore the politicians, are exercised about nutrients in rivers and combined sewer overflows. What will be squeezed again from 2025 is infrastructure investment. We at Wessex are developing an alternative framework for water and the natural environment. We have seen great enthusiasm from NGOs and other stakeholders to work with us in co-creating a potential model for delivering low carbon, sustainable solutions to the current challenges. We believe our innovative ideas will ultimately benefit all stakeholders: customers, the environment and investors to deliver a better, low carbon future for water. The 5 Florida Water Management Districts all report #waterloss a little differently which makes this program so interesting. The Florida Water Loss Program introduces a standardized methodology for estimating #waterloss and assessing #datavalidity. As a result, those utilities in the state that want to control #waterlosslikeaboss are taking full advantage of the opportunity. 💧 💪 Northwest Florida Water Management District Suwannee River Water Management District St. Johns River Water Management District Southwest Florida Water Management District South Florida Water Management District
📰 GOOD READ ALERT 📰 The Florida Water Loss Program (funded through Florida Department of Environmental Protection) is helping utilities in the state to better estimate their water losses, assess their data validity, and make more informed decisions on how to invest in #waterloss control. 📝 cred: Jessica Jagdeo and Drew Blackwell

As part of yesterday's Community Project Funding celebration with U.S. Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, DRBC staff demonstrated several ways in which we monitor water quality in the Delaware River Basin. One of our guiding principles is that you can't manage what you don't measure! For each of our water quality programs, data are collected, analyzed and used in determining whether criteria are being met. #drbc #WaterQualityMonth #waterquality #delawarebasin #river #water #watermanagement #watermonitoring #waterresources #scienceandenvironment #governmentregulations #waterresourcemanagement

Did you know Texas boasts 23 river basins, with surface water being a vital resource, comprising nearly 42% of the state's water usage in 2019? Despite its significance, surface water is projected to rise to 46% of the total water supply by 2070, according to the 2022 State Water Plan. Yet, challenges like aging reservoirs and limited new reservoir sites loom, underscoring the need for sustainable water management strategies. #TREADCoalition #TexasWater https://lnkd.in/gj4rdrVJ
