UCB to Sell #Neurology and #Allergy Business in #China Belgium-headquartered #biopharmaceutical company UCB is to sell its mature neurology and allergy business in China to Singapore-based asset management group CBC and investor Mubadala, based in Abu Dhabi, for $680 million. The #transaction includes brands like Keppra, Vimpat, Neupro, Zyrtec, and Xyzal, as well as the company’s Zhuhai manufacturing site. According to UCB, combined net sales for these #medicines in China for 2023 were €131 million. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2024. "In the short term, UCB is exploring the launch of novel medicines in immunology, neurology, and rare diseases in China," stated Jean-Christophe Tellier, CEO at UCB. Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to chemotherapeutic drugs (#CHT) have increased significantly in recent years, mainly because the incidence of #cancer has increased dramatically over the last decades. The diagnosis of these reactions is complex, and an incorrect diagnosis prevents the use of first-line treatments, negatively impacting the survival of patients. In this collaborative research published in Allergy EAACI, we have demonstrated the important role of the basophil activation test #BAT in the #diagnosis and endophenotyping of immediate hypersensitivity reactions to #taxanes and #platinum salts. Novel inhibitor of the SARS-CoV-2 viral protease (Mpro) with higher in vitro potency, and increased cell permeability and oral pharmacokinetics than nirmatrelvir (Paxlovid, Pfizer). The inhibitor, named ML2006a4, was developed using the hepatitis C protease inhibitor boceprevir (BPV) as a starting point for further chemical modifications. ML2006a4 displays SARS-CoV-2 anti-protease activity in the picomolar range, and it was found less sensitive to SARS-CoV-2 mutations that cause resistance to nirmatrelvir and ensitrelvir. These mutations have already found in some circulating variants.
