Coral reefs take up 1% of the ocean but support 25% of marine life. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, they benefit an estimated one billion people around the world and protect increasingly vulnerable coastlines. However, increasing global temperatures as a result of climate change will mean we stand to lose 90% of corals if we follow the same trajectory.  In the heart of Dubai, a groundbreaking project is breathing new life into our planet's most fragile ecosystems. This documentary, made in partnership with Great Big Story, highlights the inspiring work of Coral Vita, a coral farm created by visionary environmental entrepreneurs who are growing stronger, more adaptable corals. Through controlled conditions and a method called micro-fragmenting, Coral Vita is working to grow corals faster while building their resilience against climate change. Just last year, DP World opened the UAE’s first restorative and educational coral exhibition in partnership with Coral Vita to support regional initiatives to scale restoration solutions. Our partnership exemplifies our dedication to supporting biodiversity-positive actions, focusing on shorelines, living seawalls and biogenic reefs across the areas we operate in. With 90% of traded goods carried by marine transportation, we are committed to restoring the health of marine ecosystems through innovation and science-based targeted actions in line with our recently launched Ocean Strategy. Investing in projects like Coral Vita, we help advance actions towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals 14 for the preservation, restoration and protection of marine biodiversity. The mesmerizing depths of our oceans hold within them a world of wonder and beauty, teeming with an incredible diversity of life. Among these underwater marvels, coral reefs stand out as vibrant and vital ecosystems, supporting countless marine species and providing livelihoods for millions of people around the world. However, coral reefs are facing unprecedented threats from climate change, pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction. The alarming decline of coral reefs not only jeopardizes the incredible biodiversity they support but also undermines the health and resilience of our oceans as a whole. #WhatHasChanged in recent years is our heightened awareness of the urgent need to protect and preserve these invaluable marine habitats. We're witnessing firsthand the devastating impacts of human activities on coral reefs, from widespread coral bleaching events to the loss of critical habitat due to coastal development and pollution. This awareness compels us to take action. It's no longer enough to simply admire the beauty of coral reefs from afar; we must actively work to safeguard them for future generations. #ActForNature is a call to arms, urging us to step up and become stewards of our marine environments. We can start by supporting initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change, which is the single greatest threat to coral reefs. Additionally, we must advocate for sustainable fishing practices, protect marine protected areas, and promote responsible tourism to minimize the impact on coral reef ecosystems. But protecting coral reefs isn't just a matter of conservation; it's also about ensuring the well-being of coastal communities that depend on these ecosystems for their livelihoods and sustenance. As we celebrate this upcoming World Ocean Day on June 8th, it's imperative to acknowledge the profound impact our oceans have on every facet of life on Earth. Did you know that the global ocean economy is estimated to be worth $1.5 trillion annually, according to WWF? That stems from around 350 million jobs worldwide linked to the oceans, including fishing, tourism, shipping, and coastal development. From regulating our climate to providing sustenance and livelihoods for millions, the beautiful oceans are a vital component of our global ecosystem🦐. This year's theme, "Protecting Our Oceans, Preserving Our Future," resonates deeply as we confront the myriad challenges in our marine environments. Climate change, pollution, overfishing, and coral habitat destruction are threatening the health and resilience of our oceans at an alarming rate. This consists of nutrient runoff from agricultural activities and untreated sewage discharge that contribute to marine pollution, leading to harmful algal blooms and dead zones. Amidst these paralysing consequences, there is the opportunity to renew collective action and commitment to safeguarding our blue planet 🌊. One of the most pressing issues is the overfishing and destructive fishing practices that continue to deplete fish stocks and degrade marine coral reefs. Bycatching and dynamite fishing methods have destroyed the coral reefs habitats that host marine biodiversity. Despite urgent environmental initiatives like the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF), which is the multilateral partnerships among Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste that sustains extraordinary marine and coastal resources, detrimental practices still occur in these high shipping traffic environments🚢. Here at OPP, we partner with Indonesian NGOs that plant more than 400 coral reef stars into the seabed of East Bali to promote coral growth along its surface. This way, the marine biodiversity could recuperate fast enough to save the ocean’s beauty and wonders. The Great Barrier Reef is like a magical underwater kingdom, stretching along the northeastern coast of Australia. It's the largest coral reef system on Earth, so vast it can be seen from outer space. Imagine a world beneath the waves, where vibrant corals create a dazzling rainbow of colors, and thousands of marine creatures call it home. This underwater wonderland is bustling with life. Picture yourself snorkeling among graceful sea turtles, playful dolphins, and schools of colorful fish darting through the coral gardens. The reef is a haven for biodiversity, with countless species of marine life living in its warm, clear waters. But the Great Barrier Reef is more than just a beautiful sight; it's a vital ecosystem that supports the health of our planet. The corals provide shelter and food for a myriad of marine creatures, while also protecting coastal areas from erosion and storm damage. Sadly, the reef is facing threats from climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Rising ocean temperatures can cause coral bleaching, where the corals lose their vibrant colors and become vulnerable to disease. Pollution from land runoff and plastic waste can smother the corals and disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to protect and preserve the Great Barrier Reef for future generations. 🌊 Explore the French Mediterranean Sea with CrossGov! The French #MediterraneanSea is a vital #biodiversity hotspot, with over 100 protected areas. Yet, less than 1% are highly protected, signalling the need for more robust conservation. Meanwhile, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region plays a crucial role in the maritime economy, with 3% of jobs tied to the sea, increasing to 10% when including coastal tourism. However, balancing economic growth with #marineecosystem health is a growing challenge due to #overfishing, #tourism, and planned offshore #windfarms.
