The final part of our second #CornwallGoodFoodSummit at Nancarrow Farm on Monday 2 December asks everyone to explore the barriers that prevent the food system from changing for the better. What can we all do to move things on? Summit participants can choose between two different breakout sessions. In ‘Making it work in the marketplace’ we’re being asked to reflect on the challenges consumers face in obtaining local, sustainable food in Cornwall. How do we make it more easily available? We’ll hear from two people who took part in the Food Conversation enabled by the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission in Cornwall and across the four nations: * Lucy Jones of the Cornish Food Box Company and Cornwall Food and Farming Group * Food Conversation citizen participant Paul Fowler In ‘Making it work on the farm’ we’ll hear from two farmers / producers: * Anthony Ellis of Pensipple Farm, Looe and the Farm Carbon Toolkit * Mark Williams and Inez Williams-King of Presingoll Farm and The Grower tree nursery, St Agnes They’ll share examples of how they’re innovating, diversifying and adapting to produce good food, care for the planet and develop a viable business in a challenging environment.

What makes a thriving bioregional food system? We are lucky to have some powerful examples of this in our host farm networks, from the US to Europe. This spring during our course at Tenuta di Spannocchia, we’ll dive into this discussion with facilitation help from Kathleen Finlay of Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming and culinary education from Sarah Levi of Rome Sustainable Food Project. What does the Hudson Valley of New York have in common with Tuscany, and how can we take away inspiration from one location and seed it into beneficial food systems change in another? Join us in Tuscany as we experience diversified vegetable production, heritage breed animal husbandry, vineyard management, natural winemaking, and converting land from conventional to organic management in rice production. We’ll visit Agriturismo Tenuta San Carlo and Tenuta di Paganico Soc. Agr. SpA to gain insights and inspiration from this regional network of regenerative farms shining a light on what’s possible for the #futureoffood. On #WorldFoodDay, the Netherlands reaffirms its commitment to ensuring food security globally through innovative and sustainable practices. This year’s theme, The Right to Food, highlights the pressing need for everyone to have access to nutritious food. As global challenges grow, food security is more important than ever. In #WestAfrica, the Netherlands is working with local partners to boost horticultural development and promote agroecological solutions. In Côte d'Ivoire, the HortiNord project focuses on empowering young ‘hortipreneurs’ by providing training in sustainable greenhouse farming and modern agricultural techniques. This programme is transforming horticulture and creating opportunities for future generations. Meanwhile in #Senegal, the HortiCôte programme addresses food sovereignty by supporting vegetable production through sustainable, climate-resilient practices. By partnering with Dutch businesses, we’re fostering innovation and collaboration to ensure a stable food supply, while also creating jobs and promoting youth entrepreneurship. Together, through initiatives like these, we can build a world where everyone has the right to healthy, sustainable food. 📣 #LOWINFOOD partner The James Hutton Institute will be present at the Scottish Skipper Expo in Aberdeen #Scotland 🌊 👥📅 On May 9-10 the team will attend the event to present the outcomes of the dialogue carried out among fish supply chain actors to identify innovative solutions with the potential to reduce loss and waste of fish. In fact, the team is calling on the wider seafood sector to take an online survey to help them understand the potential of its catch by getting more value from by-products. 🗣 “We would like the industry to help us identify where the best opportunities are and find ways to overcome the barriers to unlock them,” says Nazli Köseoglu, applied economist at the Hutton. 🎯 “If we can help to pinpoint what the opportunities are, it could also help bring in innovative players, funding and opportunities to collaborate and lead to a more circular approach in the seafood supply chain” adds. ✍🏼 To fill in the #survey🔗 https://lnkd.in/dFv6N3Hg 🙋🏻🙋🏽♂️The team will be at stand G5 ready to talk to anyone in the sector😊. New reports out today, and the first I have worked on alongside colleagues at Madre Brava gives German food retailers clear guidance to meet emissions targets, as well as having several other environmental, human health and animal welfare benefits. The first report from Quantis, a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) consultancy explores strategies to reduce FLAG (Forest, Land, and Agriculture) emissions and meet 2030 climate targets, including: 🌱A plant-rich food system; 🌽Sustainable agricultural practices; and 🚮Reducing food loss and waste (FLW) Promoting a plant-rich food system was the leading strategy, saving €156 per tonne of CO2 reduced by substituting 30% of meat and milk for plant-based alternatives. The second report shows how these strategies contribute to the estimated reduction needed by the German food retail sector to meet the science based target initiative's 30.3% reduction in emissions by 2030, and which ones are the best and most cost-effective to meet this target. Again, 30% substitution of meat and milk was the best and most cost-effective, alongside agricultural practices focused on animal health, reducing emissions from crop production by moving towards sustainable nitrogen management and electrification of farm machinery, and educating consumers on FLW. #LOWINFOOD Practice Abstract 10: results and challenges 🐟 Fish supply chain dialogue to reduce waste in #Scotland ℹ️ Since fish supply chain stakeholders have potentially contrasting goals, mutual understanding and long-lasting collaboration is key🤝. 🔹 Key conclusion: due to the high value of seafood products, the supply chain is efficient in allocating them to the most profitable use. Still, some mismatches between economic and environmental goals remain. 🔹 Action taken: successful cooperation requires the building of trust between industry and researchers, and to make the reputational benefits of innovation clear. 🎯Find out more👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/dMx_GKnC #practiceabstract #fish #fishery #dialogue #collaboration #result #challenge #foodwaste #foodloss #sustainability #Italy #ReduceFoodWaste #H2020FoodSis #H2020 The James Hutton Institute Simone Piras Nazli Köseoglu Fiona Sturgeon Pietro Iannetta Jeni Adamson Seafood Scotland Iceland Ocean Cluster Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre Bioeconomy Cluster Builder Fisheries Innovation & Sustainability Christine Rolin Andrea McColl Hannah Fennell Wendy Chadwick B.Sc (Hons) M.Sc John Goodlad LEROMA GmbH Felicitas Schneider Julian Parfitt European Research Executive Agency (REA) European Commission European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) SAFE - Safe Food Advocacy Europe
