How has Russia's invasion of Ukraine reshaped the EU's Eastern neighbourhood policy and has the new policy affected the strategies of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries? 🔍 In their new article published on Policy Studies, FIIA's Ryhor Nizhnikau and Arkady Moshes from the Institute's Russia, the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood and Eurasia research programme examine the policy responses to the war of the EU and the countries of the EU-Russia contested neighbourhood. They specifically highlight the shifts in two key attributes of the EU's foreign policy, which have traditionally defined its neighbourhood policy: its relations with Russia and the inclusiveness of the EaP countries in the European project. My article about Arctic Europe and its future is now out, published in BSR Policy Briefing series by Centrum Balticum Foundation. In the paper I present some thoughts about how things could develop in #Arctic cooperation, with focus on European Arctic.
Since the beginning of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the framework for international cooperation in the Arctic region has changed profoundly. Arctic Europe, especially the northernmost parts of Finland, Sweden and Norway are adapting to a new situation. According to Heikkilä Markku , the adjusting is happening without coherent plans yet in place. 74 years ago, Robert Schuman presented his Declaration on the Future of Europe. It marked the beginning of the European project as we know it nowadays, led firstly by the creation of a common market of coal and steel aiming to ensure peace solidarity in Europe. The EU is a project to ensure peace in Europe, but today we face possibly one of the toughest moments to the endurance of peace. The invasion of Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East, migratory movements, far right and other disruptive tendencies pose a grave threat to our stability. As Schuman mentioned at the beginning of his Declaration "World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it”. To that end, we must find ways to endure and further develop the European project. In addition, we need to focus on solidarity again, as fellow Europeans. The European project is not something finished and we should not take it for granted. As Europeans we all must be aware of the importance of the EU and fight for it. We also must actively participate in the decisions made in the European Institutions, and the first step is to place your vote for the next elections (June 9th in Portugal). Quoting Schuman again, “Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan: it will be formed through concrete measures which bring about a de facto solidarity." Let’s celebrate today our biggest achievement as European citizens and take the stand by voting next month. #EU #Europeanelections #vote #Schumandeclaration #Europeday #Europe
