On 3 June, the UNFCU FOUNDATION INC hosted its 15th annual golf outing at the historic Nassau Country Club to support the incredible work of the Kilimanjaro Initiative (KI). KI was founded in 2006 by our very own Tim Challen to encourage young women and men in Kenya and Tanzania to have self-belief and to assist in providing opportunities that will enable them to take on constructive roles in their communities. KI organizes an annual Mt. Kilimanjaro climb to raise awareness of social issues that affect youth, in which more than 400 youth have gained mentorship and team-building skills. This year’s golf event brought together a record 122 golfers in support of initiatives that promote self-belief for youth in the Kibera informal settlement. The National Youth Agency is calling for greater investment in Youth Services. The implementation of legislation to underpin councils’ legal duty to provide a local youth offer is among a series of recommendations in a new manifesto designed to increase young people’s access to youth services. The NYA states that the introduction of a new government document would have to be accompanied with greater spending on youth services. Other recommendations listed in the report include the creation of a national youth strategy and a dedicated youth minister at cabinet level with a cross-departmental remit. We greatly support this new manifesto and hope that the government takes the suggestion of a new Statutory Duty Youth Services Act onboard. #youthservices #youth #youthspending #council #charity

Our team in Kenya recently signed on the Leventis Football Club to aid in raising awareness of human trafficking. Here's what our team in Kenya has shared with us — "Our team has recognized that there was a growing issue of human trafficking in the sports industry, particularly in African countries where players are trafficked to Europe to play for their teams. The allure of European football clubs and the desire for a better life drive many young players to trust agents who exploit their dreams. Traffickers take advantage of vulnerable individuals, promising them opportunities that never come to fruition and subject them to exploitation and abuse instead. Sports trafficking involves the sale of athlete's across national boundaries for profit. This illegal activity leaves players in precarious legal positions, having been coerced into signing exploitative contracts by agents who claim to have connections with professional clubs abroad. Young players and their families, who are often from low-income backgrounds, are lured by the promise of a better future and fall victim to these traffickers. Leventis Football Club has stepped in to help us combat this horrific issue. They have taken proactive steps to raise awareness and prevent human trafficking within the sports industry. By collaborating youth associations and sports programs, the club aims to educate young players on the common indicators of trafficking and the risks of false promises of professional contracts. By providing training and support to these youths, our organization is empowering them to make informed decisions and protect themselves from traffickers. Additionally, our organization has initiated partnerships and dialogues with sports agencies and leagues to address the root causes of sports trafficking.
