On June 12th, together with Lorenzo Dello Sbarba, we will be leading the peer parliament. Instead of the usual promotion, I decided to share a reflection (requested? no necessary? maybe). 🌿 During my studies, I always appreciated the psychological side. It made me realize that beyond data and direct communication, there are human beings to understand. Without this, talking about energy transition, climate change, and the European Union would remain futile. 🧠 Viewing the topic of this peer parliament through a psychological lens provides endless important insights. Check out the must-watch 2018 TED Talk by meteorologist J. Marshall Shepherd, "3 Kinds of Bias that Shape Your Worldview". As a weather geek, he finds the question of whether he believes in climate change odd because science isn’t about belief; it’s about proof. 🔍 The problem is that facts clash with biases that shape our perceptions. There are three main biases to consider: 1️⃣Confirmation Bias: Focusing on evidence that supports what we already believe. 2️⃣Dunning-Kruger Effect: Thinking we know more than we do and underestimating what we don’t know. 3️⃣Cognitive Dissonance: Experiencing discomfort when encountering actions or ideas that don’t fit our beliefs and arguing away the new evidence. 💡 Given that energy transition is a discomforting topic, I see cognitive dissonance on social media all the time. People try to find reasons other than climate change for events happening around them, even when faced with strong scientific explanations. They dismantle it due to the Dunning-Kruger effect and seek confirmation bias through alternative sources. J. Marshall Shepherd argues that we need to close the gap between public perception and scientific fact to create a better future. We need to take an inventory of our biases and the beliefs that support them. 🔄 After this unsolicited Environmental Psychology 101 lesson (if you want an in depth analysis on this, i recommend talking with my boy Adrien Chanteloup), what’s my point? More science isn’t the solution. During this peer parliament, I could list facts about the cost benefits of energy transition, how well the EU is doing, and how citizens who don’t turn off lights are the worst. Would it have any effect? Maybe on my ego. So, I repeat, more science isn’t the solution. People are the solution—understanding how they work as rational and emotional, messy and inconsistent, ingenious herd animals. 👥 I invite you to register not to hear me speak but for me to hear you. Prioritising clean energy transition (#cet) and #energyefficiency in these investment projects will help Europe meet its ambitious climate goals. 🏭 Municipalities are also responsible for about 𝟳𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
