WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT TODAY'S SCHOOL COACHES? Last week's Million Coaches Challenge conversation offered some much-needed perspective into how state institutions can partner to implement training for coaches in mental health and youth development. ICYMI, watch the recording at the link below. Want more insights? We recently collaborated with researchers at LiFEsports at The Ohio State University to analyze national coach survey findings. We wanted to better understand school coaches and their backgrounds, training interests, satisfaction and support needs. School coaches, especially teachers, are well-positioned to support youth development, but gaps remain in their preparation and support. Here's what we found: - School coaches report more training in health & safety topics than coaches in non-school settings - Coaches who were teachers in the school report more training and confidence in supporting mental health and PYD than coaches who were not teachers in the school. - A significant portion of school-based coaches report feeling unprepared to work with socially vulnerable youth, but those with advanced degrees in education, psychology and physical fitness felt most prepared. - Nearly half of school coaches had not completed training in trauma-informed practice (47%). Concerning gaps in training include emotional regulation, working with caregivers, and safety on social media. - Almost all school coaches felt they made a strong impact on athletes in life, leadership and sports skills, but teachers report a much greater perceived impact on persistence in education than non-teachers who coach in schools. - 77% of school-based coaches felt stressed. - Only 55% of school-based coaches believed parents/caregivers expressed appreciation for their coaching and 17% report parents/caregivers always criticize their performance. - Many school-based coaches felt they lacked key resources, including pay (82%) equipment (77%), team funding (82%) and admin support (74%) Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/gu5t9sqq
