We bring together the changemakers who have the power to solve society’s shared problems and strengthen our democracy.
About us
Changemakers — citizens and grantmaking foundations, nonprofits and social enterprises, businesses, and government — have the power to solve society’s shared problems and steward our common resources. They do it best when they do it together. PSI helps strengthen these social actors and their capacity to work in partnership. Jane Wales, a social sector expert whose work sits at the nexus of civic engagement, citizen agency, trust, and democracy, leads PSI as it carries out its programmatic aims: * Advance philanthropic strategy, practice, and impact * Develop and support social sector leaders * Increase nonprofit data access and transparency * Build more effective cross-sector partnerships

Despite rising financial contributions and volunteer hours, these are coming from a shrinking pool of individuals, concentrating wealth and agency. Jane Wales, Co-Chair of the The Generosity Commission, recently highlighted this issue at the BBB Wise Giving Alliance's Donor Trust and Participation forum. She urges nonprofit leaders to celebrate and support everyday volunteers, and to illuminate the role of everyday donors. "The job of tracking and analyzing giving in all of its forms is all-important. Part of that is realizing and acknowledging that the impact of each kind of giving is different, and volunteering is giving.” Check out more insights from Jane Wales in The NonProfit Times: https://lnkd.in/evw2pPYu

In late June, PSI Executive Director Jane Wales took the stage with David Brooks, Xavier Jennings, Kamar Sati and Hanna Corona at Aspen Ideas to discuss generosity, youth leadership, community belonging and building relationships that strengthen our democracy. PSI's #FridayReads is on pause this week for the Fourth of July. We'll be back next week. In the meantime, happy weekend to all!

PSI's #FridayReads for June 28, 2024: 📰 Associate Director Sarina Beges-Thysen points us to a wonderful interview with Nicole Taylor, president and CEO of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (an Aspen Philanthropy Group member). https://lnkd.in/gTHSbtSz 🎁 Rasheeda Childress pens an overview of the "Giving USA" 2024 report for The Chronicle of Philanthropy. Giving continues to decline overall and inflation is affecting everyday donors and their ability to give. https://lnkd.in/eaZeBbKu 🤝 Finally, Independent Sector's fifth annual "Trust in Nonprofits and Philanthropy" report found that public trust in nonprofits bounced up in 2024. The increase ends a four-year streak of declining trust. https://lnkd.in/e42sJGu5

Will you be at Aspen Ideas next week? If so, we want to hear from you! Head over to the East Lawn Tent on Tuesday, June 25, at 3:10pm MT to see PSI's Jane Wales lead a focus group conversation on Generosity: Revitalizing Democracy Together. Then join in with your thoughts. The engaged citizen is democracy’s greatest asset, but many Americans are disillusioned and disengaged, and feel a loss of agency. In this focus group conversation, next-generation volunteers, givers, leaders — and audience members — share what motivates and what gets in the way. The deadline to advocate for regular nonprofit employment and wage data has been extended to 🌟 June 26. 🌟 Scroll the document to see if you’re in a key state or district, such as in Washington, Wisconsin, Oregon, Illinois and Connecticut. Nudging state nonprofit or philanthropy associations to chime in would also be helpful!
📣 📣📣 Attention nonprofit data friends! 📣 📣📣 ❗ You know that the latest nonprofit employment and wage data we have is from 2017. ✨ But the policy stars are aligning — quarterly nonprofit employment and wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data is within reach. Recent updates: 📝 Some Senators and House members signed “Dear Colleague” letters requesting a modest appropriation for BLS quarterly nonprofit data in FY 2025. 💲 BLS produced a Nonprofit Data BLS Congressional Budget Justification for FY2025 (https://lnkd.in/eivbne-M) that outlines how much money is needed to provide data ($4 to $8 million) through its Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. 🏛 Independent Sector and The Aspen Institute's PSI co-hosted a nonprofit workforce roundtable at the White House in March (https://lnkd.in/eYRwNYWx). 🤝 And now we need your help! We need your help by June 15 to advocate for nonprofit employment and wage data! ✔ Identify if your Representatives or Senators sit on the House or Senate Appropriations committees and relevant subcommittees using the list in the 2024 BLS Advocacy Packet (download below; put together by Nancy Wolanski of United Way of Rhode Island). ✔ Email them using sample letters in the Advocacy Packet. ✔ Be sure to include your state’s nonprofit share of private employment in your email (also in the Advocacy Packet)! Subcommittee members in ⚡yellow⚡ are a top priority, but writing to committee members is a close second. Quarterly employment and wage data would be a huge help to our field. Thank you for your help!
