The UN Industrial Development Organization is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. UNIDO’s Environment Department supports UNIDO in its mandate to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development in developing countries and economies in transition by
* establishing and applying concepts for circular economy and resource efficiency, across relevant sectors, to support industries: to adopt sustainable design practices for increased longevity, recyclability, reduced use of pollutants and improved resource efficiency; and to improve their resource productivity and environmental performance, through the adoption of resource-efficient and cleaner production practices, methods and techniques;
* promoting alternative technologies, substitutes and approaches that minimize the impact of industries on the environment, on natural resources and on the Earth’s climate;
* supporting governments in designing and delivering policies, strategies and projects to fulfill national commitments under multilateral environmental agreements; promoting industry-level action to reduce the production, use and emission of the controlled substances under the Montreal Protocol, the Minamata Convention and the Stockholm convention.
* assisting governments in the preparation and implementation of policies, strategies and projects for fostering both circular economy and green industry at large, as well as promoting industry-level action for the environmentally-sound management, and reduction of toxic or hazardous chemicals intentionally manufactured, used or emitted by industry;
The Environment Department of UNIDO consists of four divisions; the Montreal Protocol Division (MPD), the Industrial Pollution and Mitigation Division (IPM), the Industrial Resource Efficiency Division (IRE) and the Materials and Chemicals Management Division (MCMD).
