Earlier in the year, our CoRE class at Merredin College Primary had an incredible learning journey exploring the various types of saltbush in Australia. Under the guidance of the dedicated Amber-Lee Kernaghan and the amazing Suzy Urbaniak OAM, our students researched different saltbush plants, created detailed posters, and even visited Lake Campion to learn about salt lakes, salt crystals and the fascinating world beneath the surface. 🌿 The passion and commitment to hands-on learning from educators like Amber is truly what makes a difference, providing students with rich, real-world STEM education. These experiences are what make the CoRE Learning Foundation stand out. What does a CoRE classroom look like? ✨ This is a CoRE classroom at Merredin College. Here, students are not just sitting at desks—they're up, collaborating, and fully immersed in hands-on STEM learning. "The integration of CoRE into Merredin College's curriculum has provided students with a strong foundation in STEM from the outset. This early exposure fosters a deeper understanding of CoRE principles and encourages exploration and innovation," says Deb Cartwright, Wheatbelt CoRE Coordinator. From storyboarding town hall presentations to exploring advanced STEM concepts, CoRE students are building skills that will serve them for life. This is what education looks like when students are empowered to thrive in an increasingly STEM-driven world. 🚀 Interested in bringing CoRE to your school? The CoRE Learning Model transformed Denzyl Moncrieff's career path, leading him to become the first Aboriginal male to earn a BSc in Applied Geology from Curtin University and embark on a successful career with IGO Ltd. "As an Aboriginal person, the CoRE Learning Model was really easy for me to grasp and excel at. It was practical and hands-on. There were field trips with time on Country. It was more about the final product and the lessons you learned along the way, rather than having the same old, boring style of teaching where there was only one way to achieve the final product." - Denzyl Moncrieff Through hands-on learning, field trips as part of our CoRE Learning Model and our Gamifying Earth Science (GES) initiative, CoRE is preparing the next generation of STEM leaders. Denzyl's story shows how powerful immersive education and industry engagement can be. Last month, the Years 5 and 6 class at Australian Christian College - Darling Downs embarked on a thrilling CoRE Science expedition field trip at Point Peron, immersing themselves in the wonders of the coastal ecosystem. From exploring the historic Cape Peron Lookout and the Tamala limestone to uncovering remnants of Australia's military past, the journey was filled with awe-inspiring discoveries. "We marvelled at the resilience of coastal plants and engaged in hands-on learning, identifying biotic and abiotic factors on the beach," said Michelle Santiago Lastrilla, CoRE Co-ordinator at Australian Christian College, Darling Downs. The highlight? Witnessing a school of dolphins swimming nearby. CoRE's unique approach to learning through industry-focused field trips keeps students engaged and sparks lifelong scientific curiosity.
