Be Seen. Be Safe. Share the Road. This is the theme of this weekend's Cadel Evans (AM) Great Ocean Road Race (CEGORR) as we work to protect cyclists on Victoria's roads. Sadly, the number of cyclists killed on Victorian roads increased by 50% last year, and in the first six months of 2024, 223 cyclists were hospitalised. Of these, 18 people stayed in hospital for longer than 14 days. "Cyclists are among our most vulnerable road users and must be seen to stay safe. Whether you’re a rider or a driver, we encourage all road users to look out for each other and stay vigilant when travelling on our roads," said TAC CEO Tracey Slatter. Now, in its 10th year, the partnership with CEGORR allows for direct engagement with the cycling community. The TAC-sponsored People's Ride has attracted more than 3000 entrants including 15 TAC riders. “Safety is a fundamental part of not only our sport, but the general recreation of cycling and our event is a great opportunity to spread safety messaging to the many thousands of cyclists here in the Geelong region and across Australia,” said CEGORR founder Cadel Evans. This weekend will feature Club Allez, a space for spectators to stop and refresh, as well as the chance to enter the Safe Jersey competition. Find out more details here https://lnkd.in/e3gSq9MC

We promote road safety and support those who have been injured on our roads.
About us
The TAC is working towards zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads. A Victorian Government-owned organisation, our role is to pay for treatment and benefits for people injured in transport accidents and to promote road safety. The TAC is a no-fault scheme where medical benefits are paid to an injured person - regardless of who caused the accident. This is funded by vehicle registration payments Victorian motorists make each year to VicRoads. Payments and conditions are guided by the Transport Accident Act 1986. Victorians are being urged to drive safely this long weekend as 22 people have already tragically lost their lives on Victoria’s roads. The number of people killed on the state’s roads this year (22 as of 23 January) is already 29% higher than at the same time last year (17). "Every Victorian has a role to play in keeping people safe on our roads, slow down, put the phone away, wear a seatbelt and never drive while affected by drugs or alcohol," said TAC CEO Tracey Slatter "There is nothing more important than arriving at your destination safely, and we need to look out for each other on the roads and make sure every journey is a safe one." With fatigue contributing to 16%-20% of all road crashes in Victoria, drivers are asked to stop in at one of the TAC’s 15 Pause Stop locations set up at Visitor Information Centres across the state, as part of a partnership with the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC). The risks of drinking and driving home from country racing events are highlighted in our latest campaign with Country Racing Victoria, where we urge all racegoers to get home safely. The campaign follows a tragic year on Victoria’s roads in 2024, with 282 lives lost compared with 295 in 2023. More than half of these fatalities in 2024 were in regional areas. “We’re working closely with Country Racing Victoria to ensure there are enough safe transport options available for racegoers across the state,” said TAC CEO Tracey Slatter. The new content features Everyday Heroes of Ballarat, who play significant roles in making a race day happen – a horse handler, an operations manager and a designated driver. The TAC has partnered with CRV for more than 15 years to reach the many Victorians who attend these popular regional events with our drink driving message. This year the TAC will be present at more than 20 Country Cups with drink driving information and a prize draw. “It is vital for all racegoers to plan ahead, not only for the event itself but also for their transportation needs. CRV and country clubs remain committed to working with the TAC to promote this important educational message,” said Country Racing Victoria Chairman Chas Armytage. #TACVictoria #roadsafety #roadsafetyawareness #partnerships #countryracing #regionalVictoria

Congratulations to the two winners of our Split Second Competition who will be using their creative skills to help save lives on our roads. Now in its 6th year, both filmmakers and content creators were asked to focus on one of two risky road safety behaviours - fatigue or not wearing a seatbelt. Olivia Hartanto won with her Captain Buckle concept, a witty take on seatbelt usage – and Rhys D. Callanan entered with Fashionably Late where tired driving was reimagined through a horse-and-carriage lens. The films will be premiered in February. “Rhys and Olivia have created concepts that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on their audiences. Their creativity has the power to influence the attitudes and behaviours among their peers and make a change in road safety awareness in Victoria,” said Head of Community Jacqui Sampson. "We're constantly looking for new, innovative ways to get the road safety message through. It's inspiring to see the efforts of these two young creatives - we're excited to bring those ideas to life.” Research shows young drivers are involved in more crashes resulting in death and serious injury than any other group of drivers. One of the most critical factors in those incidents is fatigue. People aged 18-25 years are also most likely to travel as a driver and passenger without wearing a seatbelt. Find all more information on the competition her on the TAC website. https://lnkd.in/gnk-YEW #TACVictoria #roadsafetyawareness #seatbelts #tireddriving #youngdrivers #filmmakers #creatives

In collaboration with our road safety partners, we will continue striving for our shared goal of eliminating road trauma on Victorian roads. #TACVictoria #roadsafety
We’re continuing to invest in road safety with Road Safety Action Plan 2. In the plan we’ve detailed how, alongside our road safety partners, Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Victoria Police Department of Justice and Community Safety, Victoria and Victorian Department of Health, we’ll continue to work on reducing trauma and deaths on our roads. We are continuing to deliver on over $1.1 billion of investment supporting the our commitment to halving deaths and significantly reducing road trauma by 2030, including $350 million for new initiatives. The funding will deliver critical road safety infrastructure, including safety barriers on high-risk curves, rural and urban roads. To protect vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists the plan will fund infrastructure improvements at more than 100 high-risk sites across the state. We will also extend the Distracted Driving and Seatbelt Camera Program that detects dangerous and distracted behaviours such as illegal use of portable devices and seatbelt non-use. We encourage people to also think about the role they play in making our roads safer and to drive safely on our roads. Read the plan in full https://lnkd.in/ga4RzR4E
