We connect skilled newcomers of African descent with meaningful career opportunities in Canada

About us

300,000 newcomers arrive in Canada each year; unemployment and underemployment are among the largest challenges faced by those transitioning to Canada. According to Statistics Canada, African-born immigrants have the lowest employment rate and the highest unemployment rate of all immigrant groups. These rate differentials are most drastic when comparing them to Canadian-born citizens. The lack of recognition of previous work experience and education by employers limits newcomers' ability to secure adequate jobs. Most newcomers move here for the promise of a better life but face immense challenges securing jobs matching their skill level, leaving them feeling undervalued. At makingtheMove, our mission is to help skilled newcomers of African descent secure jobs that value their unique combination of education, skills, and work experience so that they have meaningful work.  We support newcomers by building an awareness of the job marketplace, allowing them to create meaningful connections with industry leaders and providing resources that accelerate their career transition to Canada.

Sitting for long periods can strain your back muscles and lead to pain. Here are 4 simple exercises you can do at your workplace to relieve back pain, all while seated or standing: 🧘🏽♀️Seated twist: Sit with your feet flat on the floor and twist your torso to one side, looking over your shoulder. Hold for 10-15 seconds and repeat on the other side. 🧘🏽♀️Seated shoulder rolls: Sit tall and roll your shoulders forward in a circular motion, then backward. Repeat 5-10 times in each direction. 🧘🏽♀️ Ankle circles: While seated or standing, rotate your ankles clockwise 10 times, then counter-clockwise 10 times. Repeat this 2-3 times. 🧘🏽♀️Chin tucks: Gently tuck your chin down towards your chest, hold for 10-15 seconds, and then release. Repeat 5-10 times.
