In case you missed it, we recommend revisiting this chapter from the report: ‘Financing the Transitions the World Needs: Towards a New Paradigm for Carbon Markets’. David Antonioli provides some thoughtful insights into how NCS fit into transition finance and the current challenges faced. 👇
📣I am pleased to share the fourth chapter of my report: ‘Financing the Transitions the World Needs: Towards a New Paradigm for Carbon Markets’. Here it is… Chapter Four: Integrating Natural Climate Solutions Today’s release considers how natural climate solutions fit into my transition finance approach and the current obstacles these projects face. For me, one of the greatest climate contributions of carbon markets – especially the voluntary carbon markets – is their ability to bring additional sources of finance to the protection and restoration of natural habitats. However, if we are to integrate these vital climate solutions into a transitional approach, we must make changes. We need to adjust the rules and requirements that currently govern natural climate solutions financed through the carbon markets. What changes do I suggest? And how might these ideas impact project permanence? Find out for yourself in Chapter Four below 👇 If anyone missed the release of the previous chapters, you can find them here: >> https://lnkd.in/eW_2_BBC Check back at the same time next week to read Chapter Five: Lessons for the Energy Transition. There are several mechanisms for investing in land-based solutions to reduce and remove emissions, each with its own financing models, accounting rules, and reporting obligations, including: 🔗🌍In value chain: Including interventions that may be counted towards scope 3 science-based targets. 🚀🌳Beyond value chain: Initiatives that go 'above and beyond' corporate targets, such as landscape-level investments and #VoluntaryCarbonMarket activities. Verra is consulting on an optional pathway to update VCS projects and obtain CCP labels. They've opened a public consultation on an optional pathway for projects registered under the VCS Program. 🗓️ The consultation is open from July 9 through August 9. Check out the full announcement for more details and the complete proposed procedure: https://lnkd.in/eKUQQF4v
📢 New public consultation open! Verra has launched a public consultation on an optional pathway for projects registered in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program to (1) update to a new methodology or methodology version for past verification periods and (2) requantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from past verification periods in accordance with that methodology. If the new methodology or methodology version to which a project updates is approved by The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), such a change would enable proponents to obtain Core Carbon Principles (CCP) labels for the requantified Verified Carbon Units (VCUs). The consultation is open from July 9 through August 9, 2024. See the full announcement for more details, including the full text of the proposed procedure: https://bit.ly/4bB7tNF #Verra #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #StandardsMatter

🌍 The Peoples Forests Partnership, a valued member of the Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, has urged the Science Based Targets initiative to include forest communities in developing corporate decarbonization guidance. 🌱 Indigenous Peoples, traditional owners, and local communities receive less than 1% of climate finance despite being the best stewards of natural ecosystems. Their voices must be heard. 📊 Major corporations' Scope 3 emissions often exceed entire nations' emissions. The PFP supports using high-quality, rights-based carbon credits to address this, with direct community funding and ambitious decarbonization targets. 🗣️ Including these communities in carbon credit discussions is vital for effective climate finance and conservation.
