How can we mainstream food innovation? 🤔 There's no single answer. But now there's a handy roadmap! 💡👇 The World Economic Forum teamed up with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to develop a white paper outlining a framework to source innovations, shape them to ensure they are fit for purpose and scale them by mobilizing the right ecosystem of partners to drive adoption. The document highlights four major food innovation areas: 🚜 Soil health and climate-smart farming, including regenerative farming 📱Data, digital and AI, including digital and precision agriculture 🥩 Protein innovation and nutrition, including plant based proteins, precision fermentation and cultivated meats ⛓ Value chain management, including sustainable packaging. The report stresses that early-stage food innovations are strong, scaling remains a challenge — and innovation ecosystems will play a key role in unlocking adoption and scale. We couldn't agree more. What's the role of the food service industry in driving food system transformation? 🍽 Last week, our CEO Christina Senn-Jakobsen and Partnership Manager Maëlle Bydlon spoke with Marc Stierand's students at EHL and challenged them to consider this question. One of the students asked how realistic their answers should be. We thought this was a great question! We believe that we need to be as creative and imaginative as possible. We need to think BIG. ✨ Because in restaurants and canteens we dare to try new foods and flavours. The food sector allows consumers to taste the future and make new choices that help them adopt and maintain healthier and more sustainable diets. All the students in the photo below — and all the others that aren't — will play a key role in driving food system transformation in their future roles. Swiss FoodTech startup Luya has successfully closed a CHF 5 million Series A financing round 💰👏 🌱 Luya produces a fermented, healthy, and plant-based alternative to conventional protein sources. 🔍The main ingredient in its products is okara, a nutrient-rich byproduct of tofu and soymilk production. 🇪🇺 This fresh funding will allow the team to prepare for its expansion across Europe. 🎤 Commenting on the development, Flavio Hagenbuch, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Luya, said: "Okara is not only a nutrient-rich ingredient but also available in large quantities, which enables us to be very price-competitive in the market over the medium term." This makes up about 25% of the environmental impact of our food system. In Switzerland alone, around 2.8 million tonnes of wasted food every year. The good news? Yes, we did it again... 🥳 Switzerland has been ranked the most innovative country — for the 14th consecutive year! 🇨🇭🏆 The World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index captures the innovation ecosystem performance of 133 economies. Here's what they found this year... 🌍 Switzerland is the global leader in innovation outputs, ranking 1st in both knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs. 🥇 Switzerland also attained the top ranking in university–industry R&D collaboration, intellectual property payments and receipts and PCT patents. 🔍 The study revealed that Switzerland ranked in the top 5 countries for policy stability for doing business, credit, global corporate R&D investors, ecological sustainability and state of cluster development and high-tech manufacturing. But this doesn't mean that we're resting on our laurels.
