🌍 What Can a 252-Million-Year-Old Climate Crisis Teach Us Today? 252 million years ago, the Permian-Triassic mass extinction—the most severe in Earth's history—wiped out over 80% of species. A new study by Charline Ragon, Christian Vérard, Jérôme Kasparian, and Maura Brunetti (University of Geneva) and Hendrik Nowak (University of Nottingham) & Evelyn Kustatscher (Museum of Nature South Tyrol) reveals how massive volcanic eruptions triggered a 10°C temperature rise, completely reshaping ecosystems. By analyzing fossilized plants and climate models, the researchers found: 🌱 Tundra ecosystems vanished, replaced by temperate forests at the poles. 🏜️ Deserts turned tropical as precipitation patterns shifted. 🌡️ CO₂-driven climate tipping points reshaped the planet for millions of years. ⚠️ A warning for today: If CO₂ emissions continue at current rates, we could reach Permian-Triassic levels within 2,700 years—but at a much faster pace. 🏔️ Tracking 37 Years of Snow Cover Change in Switzerland ❄️ How is climate change reshaping Switzerland’s snow cover? A new study by Charlotte Poussin, Pablo Timoner, Pascal P., and Gregory Giuliani leverages satellite data to analyze 37 years of snow cover trends using the Snow Observation from Space (SOfS) algorithm from the Swiss Data Cube. 📉 Key findings: 🔹 Significant snow loss at low to mid-elevations, especially in winter and spring (e.g., a 50% drop in winter below 1,000 m). 🔹 Snow cover area shrinking—by up to 15% in spring at transitional elevations (1,000–2,000 m). 🔹 Temperature, not precipitation, is the main driver of snow decline at lower altitudes. 📊 Future projections are stark: ➡️ By 2100, even under moderate climate action (RCP 2.6), snow-free areas could expand by 22% at lower elevations. ➡️ Under a high-emission scenario (RCP 8.5), snow-free regions could increase by over 43%, with April and May particularly affected. This research highlights the critical role of Earth observation in monitoring environmental change and guiding adaptation strategies in a country where snow is not just a natural phenomenon—it’s a cultural and economic asset. #ClimateChange #SnowCover #EarthObservation #SwissDataCube #RemoteSensing #Sustainability #Adaptation
