【#WorldRefugeeDay: Rebuilding Lives for the Displaced and Refugees🏠】 “The soldiers broke into our home and shot our dad who was trying to protect us. They also raped me and I got pregnancy from it.” Sara, the 17-year-old refugee from Sudan Crisis. The #UkraineCrisis, the #SudanConflict , the #GazaCrisis and frequent climate disasters have triggered an unprecedented wave of refugees. The number of forcibly displaced people worldwide has risen to a record-breaking 120 million, of whom up to 40% are children and teenagers. During the crisis, people are forced to leave their homes and flee in all directions. Refugee children not only face water and food shortages, but also fall into crises such as #dropout, #exploitation, #trafficking and #abuse. Even worse, girls are more likely to suffer #sexualviolence and #teenage pregnancy like Sara, causing a lifetime of trauma to them. Sara’s tragedy must never be repeated. Plan International is carrying out humanitarian relief work in several refugee-hosting countries, providing life-saving supplies such as food and clean water, psychological support, education, child protection, and sexual violence prevention assistance to the refugees so that they can rebuild their lives. 【Hong Kong’s First Longitudinal Research with Monitoring and Evaluation Study on Child Participation Reflecting the Crucial Elements of a Localised Child Participatory Model】 Speaking about children rights, people mostly think about survival, protection and development. Yet, children right to participation is also important! For the past 5 years, our “Voice of the Children” project encouraged children to participate in social affairs and work with various stakeholders, bringing about positive change to the communities. To summarise the achievements, a Symposium cum Exhibition was carried out in the past weekends, sharing the research findings of Hong Kong’s first Longitudinal Research with Monitoring and Evaluation Study on Child Participation. Value, Process and Environment are the three crucial elements of an effective child participatory model. The child-centered project should allow children to make decision on their level of participation and it is also important for partnering organisations to create a supportive environment for children to feel respected and accepted. Enhancing child participation is beneficial to children in various aspects. Apart from strengthening self-esteem and expressiveness, they learned to respect others’ opinions and had a greater sense of bonding to the community, hence motivated them to make contributions!
