The Women Who Whispered Change to the Earth 🌱👩🌾
In Maharashtra’s Garkhindi village of Ahmednagar district, a group of ten women dared to dream of a greener, healthier future for their community. Tired of the limitations and environmental concerns associated with traditional farming methods, they sought a way to empower themselves and their fellow villagers.
Their journey began with the Sustainable Livelihood Development Programme, by the Axis Bank Foundation, and implemented by WOTR in the region. Through this project, the women, united under the banner of the ‘Shri Shakti Swayam Sahayyata Mahila Samuh’ SHG, received training at a Farmer Field School. There, they unlocked the secrets of preparing organic bio-pesticides and other natural formulations capable of revitalising the soil and shielding crops from harm.
Armed with newfound knowledge and a shared vision, they set up their production unit, a 200-litre drum becoming the heart of their operation. Each batch of organic formulations required 30 days of careful preparation, a testament to their dedication and patience.
Their efforts soon bore fruit. Three successful production cycles yielded 350 litres of Dashparni Ark, a potent bio-pesticide derived from leaf extracts. News of their eco-friendly solution spread like wildfire, and 108 farmers, both from Garkhindi and neighbouring villages, eagerly purchased the formulation at Rs 25 per litre.
The impact of their initiative extended far beyond immediate financial gains. It ignited a spark of change, inspiring a shift towards sustainable agriculture in the region. As they planned to expand their production, their work promised to create a ripple effect, leading to healthier soil, a greener village, and a more balanced ecosystem for generations to come.
Anita Rajaram Zinjhad, a proud member of the SHG, expressed the sentiment shared by her fellow women. "Being part of this project fills me with pride," she declared. "It allows us to take small but meaningful steps towards making our village greener and our soil healthier. Together, we are creating a better future for our community."
