Today marks a significant milestone for R-Cities as we officially launch our statement on the ⚡new agenda for #UrbanResilienceAction. This consensus was reached during the convening at the Rockefeller Center in Bellagio. We are uniting global leaders under a common agenda to empower cities through science-based evidence, enhancing their capacity to face the polycrisis. 📢Our action agenda aims to influence national policies and catalyse investment towards resilient urban development. We urge city leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders in our urban resilience community to sign and support this statement—𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗣𝗖𝗖 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. This approach allows us to develop comprehensive solutions that address multiple challenges at once. Together, we can turn these commitments into action, ensuring cities adapt and thrive. Rotterdam is building a one-of-a-kind resilient district. As part of the Resilient BoTu program, the city is delivering solutions to bridge social, economic and climate gaps and bring benefits to the entire community. The newly unveiled Driehoeksplein park is a great example—adding much-needed green space and newly planted trees that provide shade during heatwaves and absorb rainwater during storms. Playgrounds offer children a safe place to play, while ample benches and tables foster social connection. These projects are part of a broader vision to enhance quality of life, safety, and climate readiness in BoTu, showcasing urban resilience in action.

What does Urban Resilience look like when it’s brought into practice? I think the redesigning process of the Driehoeksplein to a park in Gemeente Rotterdam West is a great example. Just before the summer break the new Driehoeksplein was opened by Mayor Aboutaleb. After a very inclusive process the new square had been finalized as crucial building block of the bigger Resilient BoTu2028 program. Square by square and street by street the #BoTu district (which stands for Bospolder Tussendijken) is becoming more resilient, in many ways. Both physically and socially. You could say that the new Driehoeksplein shows that climate resilience can work as a lever for social resilience, as the design technically makes the place climate adaptive, but foremost it became a multipurpose, safe and inclusive meeting place strengthening to the social cohesion within the community. The characteristics of the new Driehoeksplein and its related process: 👉 Social resilience: surrounding schools, parents, kids and residents were involved in the design process of the square. Resulting in a stronger community resilience. The new square is more useful for different groups, a great playground, safer, a meeting place, a multi-sport area including outdoor class room facilities, and more, and therefore contributing to a more social resilient neighborhood. 👉 Climate resilience: 5000 m2 asphalt has been removed, 2500m2 additional green, 25 trees and an underground water storage for the surrounding area came in place, including a green roof and solar panels on the school building. Proud that my colleague Nicole Majoor was able to manage this process, together with a lot of different departments within the city like Rotterdams WeerWoord and Resilient Rotterdam, and partners like Urban Synergy , the Valentijnschool, JobDurafonds and LIFE@Urbanroofs (European Commission). The integrated approach required a multi stakeholder contribution regarding expertise ànd financing. Integrated budgets would be needed to make these multi benefit solutions more tailormade as structural components of urban resilience. In the case of the Driehoeksplein the multistakeholder approach turned out to be very successful, creating a feeling of common ownership. 👉 see also this video: https://lnkd.in/gVMWtEQE Liesbeth Werleman | Hermen Borst | Hermineke van Bockxmeer | Edim Hadziavdic | Chantal Zeegers | Resilient Cities Network | Kinga Feenstra | Joelle van Aardenne MSc |

Cities are taking action to reduce the public health impacts of climate change, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞. We’re headed to New York Climate Week to amplify city-led solutions for climate and health and to advocate for increased finance for cities’ resilience efforts. From greening initiatives to reduce extreme heat to efforts to make cities walkable and promote active lifestyles, solutions that create broad benefits while addressing health and climate vulnerabilities create lasting value. Funding resilience action is a moral necessity and a sensible investment strategy. When we fund solutions at the intersection at health, climate and equity, we can reduce preventable deaths and avoid costly health expenses. We look forward to the discussions and advocacy at this year's edition of #NewYorkClimateWeek. https://lnkd.in/dDpffdgA Yale School of Public Health | The Rockefeller Foundation | Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ)

Tomorrow at #WorldWaterWeek, we invite you to join the session "𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲," on the need for collaboration at all levels of government to build more resilient urban water and sanitation systems. Despite the importance of multi-level water governance, few National Adaptation Plans and national contributions to global climate goals recognize the importance of city-level action. For cities' water resilience actions to be maximally effective, they must work in tandem with those at the local, regional, and national level, aligning policies and approaches and integrating water management with urban planning.
