Our 2023/24 Impact Review is here! 🎉 With a foreword from Sue Riddlestone OBE, it covers last year's incredible efforts from our fabulous team. Read it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dTkGiu9C Our purpose – as a charity and social enterprise – is to work with partners to find and implement ways we humans can all live happy, healthy lives within the natural limits of our one planet, while also leaving half the Earth for the rest of nature to thrive. Together, we create inspiring solutions for the ways in which we do business, how we make the products we all buy, and how we plan and build the places where we live and work. Last year we: 🏘️ led an industry campaign backed by more than 250 organisations to set a greater standard for UK homes 💼 supported 33 organisations to develop and deliver their sustainability strategies, sustainable product guidelines, carbon accounting, and net-zero roadmaps. These businesses collectively employ over 290,000 people, with a combined total turnover of over £23bn. 🏗️ worked with 13 developers and housebuilders on sustainability strategies for housing-led, mixed-use development. Collectively these could deliver over 5,000 sustainable homes, as well as over 100,000m2 of sustainable commercial or community space. 🏛️ supported 10 local authorities in their planning and policy work. Over the next decade, our work will help deliver approximately 9,000 sustainable homes per year as part of local authority growth plans. 🌍 welcomed four new One Planet Living® Leaders, taking the total to 32 gold-standard projects from around the world Thanks to all our change-making clients and partners. Let's talk public procurement. It might not be the sexiest of subject areas, (depends what you're into), but it's a big deal - particularly for carbon emissions. Decarbonising the public supply chain is crucial to meet our net-zero goals. We're here to explain the CRP out of some common jargon: 💼 PPN 06/21: It just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? The snappily named Policy Procurement Note 06/21 is a policy introduced by the UK government that requires businesses bidding for large government contracts (typically exceeding £5 million per year) to submit a CRP as part of their bid. 📉 And what is a CRP, we hear you ask? Well, this one does what it says on the tin: a Carbon Reduction Plan. A CRP quantifies all your greenhouse gas emissions and sets out when, and how, your business will reach net zero. 🚑 NHS CRP: Yep, you got it. An NHS CRP is a carbon reduction plan that all NHS England suppliers now need to have. This is designed to help the NHS reduce its environmental impact and ensure it meets its net-zero goals. To pass the new NHS legislation, your CRP needs to include: 🌍 A commitment to achieving net zero for your UK operations by 2050 at the latest, 🧮 Your baseline carbon footprint and your current emissions for scopes 1, 2, and 3, adhering to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) protocol (scope 3 categories 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 at a minimum), 💨 Your emissions in CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) for all 7 greenhouse gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol, 🌱 Your current carbon reduction initiatives and projects, and those that you will implement in the future to achieve net zero. Right, that's enough CRP puns for one day. If you're looking for support to meet PPN or NHS legislation, check out how we can help 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHsKM2id

“One of the housebuilders [that was a major Tory donor] was paying more in bonuses to their executives each year than it would have cost them to make their homes reach the zero carbon standard.” - Ed Matthew, E3G A truly terrifying reflection of a broken system 👉 https://lnkd.in/gGNvzEk9 We echo the thoughts of Ed Matthew, E3G, Jess Ralston, Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit and Simon McWhirter, UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), who all urge Labour to resist housebuilders’ pleas to weaken green standards. Our newly published research, led by Alex McCann, shows that meeting net-zero standards needn't hinder housebuilding targets 👉 https://lnkd.in/gEj-TnkS The era of cronyism, delay and distraction has to end, and Labour has to deliver - for climate and citizens. 🌍🏘️

Over the past year, Burlodge worked together with sustainability consultancy Bioregional to map out our carbon footprint for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 and put in place a robust and ambitious roadmap to reach Net Zero by 2045 across all our offices and manufacturing sites.   Our collaboration has also helped us to achieve NHS Evergreen Assessment Level 2 status in the UK.   The decision to hire a third-party consultant to conduct this work is essential to our Journey to Net Zero and Bioregional’ s commitment to what they do was a leading example throughout. The carbon reduction plan we developed in collaboration with Bioregional sets out both our near-term targets for 2030 and our longer-term targets for 2045.   We take this commitment seriously wherever we operate and, as with all aspects of our business, are determined to be leaders on this issue, not followers.      Read the case study here: https://bit.ly/45QFSHa

"Meeting net-zero standards will block housebuilders", the Tories said. "Nope - it doesn't", our research says. Alex McCann and our team have been crunching the numbers across three ambitious local authorities to establish the true impact of having sector-leading net-zero plans: Cornwall Council, Bath & North East Somerset Council and Central Lincolnshire. 🏘️ Read the full piece here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gmAY9e9j In a nutshell: 🌊 Cornwall Council: after the council adopted its progressive Development Plan Document in June 2023, applications for planning permission for new housing increased by 8.5%, 🏛️ Bath & North East Somerset Council: after the council adopted its DPD in January 2023, accepted residential applications increased by 7.7% 🏙️ Central Lincolnshire: applications approved for major residential projects saw no big change, however, applications for minor housing projects were reduced (more on this in our blog). More research is needed across a larger sample size to be confident about our preliminary findings and the conclusions that can be drawn. But still, these are encouraging signs that energy-based net-zero policies needn’t be a barrier to delivering new homes at scale. And given the vanishing window we have left to prevent catastrophic climate and nature breakdown, this research is needed urgently to drive forward innovation and calm nerves in the industry. For now, this is a slice of good news for the 250+ industry leaders that signed our recent campaign calling for a better Future Homes Standard to help the UK meet its legally binding net-zero targets and lower household energy bills. Signatories included Good Homes Alliance, UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) and LETI 👉 https://lnkd.in/gAV7beYr We hope and expect that the new Labour Government will strengthen the proposed Future Homes Standard and revoke the infamous 2023 Written Ministerial Statement. But for now, all progressive local authorities should be encouraged by these findings. Interested in our support for local authorities? Get in touch with our Director of Sustainable Places, Lewis Knight.

"We cannot ignore the link between nature and our economic wellbeing. The World Economic Forum estimates over ½ of global GDP is dependent on nature, and that nature loss is a top risk facing the global economy in the next 10 years." - RSPB's Principal Economist, Jenna Coull, responds to Aldersgate Group's recent work on the role of regulation 🌳🐤 Well-designed regulation can help to protect our economy's ecosystems, provide businesses with a level playing field, and send signals to incentivise innovation.
