Algae absorb carbon up to 50x faster than forests, filter 99% of pollutants in wastewater, and may even help fight hunger. We are delighted to announce that COSEC project led by CyanoCapture has been awarded a €4,000,000 Horizon grant from the European Commission to scale-up outdoor cultivation of resilient microalgae and cyanobacteria to capture biogenic flue gases. The consortium will be demonstrating algal CO2 capture and downstream conversion of biomass via anaerobic digestion and hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL)at the PhytoBloom - Microalgae by Necton facility in Olhao, Portugal 2024-2027. We are grateful for the opportunity to build something with an all-star team of academic and industrial partners with a common vision that we can make algal CCU affordable for the world. As my first LinkedIn post, I am excited to share that I have recently completed a six-week molecular biology internship at CyanoCapture. CyanoCapture is a company using cyanobacteria (photosynthetic bacteria) to develop a sustainable carbon capture technology. This will be crucial for industries that are difficult to decarbonise and an important technology in limiting global warming. As a molecular biology intern, I worked with the molecular biology team genetically engineering cyanobacteria for optimised carbon capture. I had two projects with the aim of developing two new cyanobacterial strains with enhanced photosynthetic efficiency and rate of carbon fixation. This involved me first carrying out molecular cloning to assemble plasmids containing designed gene expression cassettes. I then transformed cyanobacteria with these plasmids, in order to modify their genome. Spending six weeks in the laboratory independently performing many techniques required for molecular cloning and genetic engineering has been very enjoyable and I have learnt and perfected a range of lab and bioinformatic skills. My internship at CyanoCapture has also reinforced my desire to pursue a lab-based molecular biology career following my degree. I am very grateful to CyanoCapture for giving me this fantastic opportunity to significantly develop my knowledge and skills in molecular biology and letting me be a part of an inspiring company with such an important cause.
