Unlocking the huge potential of the North East visitor economy as the first-ever regional tourism pilot in England.
About us
Destination North East England is a regional partnership with an ambition to double the size of the visitor economy in ten years. The region will work together to improve skills, develop products, work with travel trade, drive innovation, support business events and improve the accessibility and sustainability of the sector. The North East has been chosen to deliver the first-ever Destination Development Partnership pilot in England, receiving £2.25 million from national government. The pilot will be led by NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI) on behalf of the region, working with delivery partners Visit Northumberland and Visit County Durham and in partnership with all seven local authorities. The partnership pilot will act as a potential blueprint for the rest of England and help shape the future landscape of tourism organisations, delivering local economic growth through the visitor economy. This pilot has been the catalyst for the development of a ten-year plan that will double the size of our visitor economy and position our region as a must-see destination, whilst attracting private investment and driving growth. This is a regional collaboration and an incredible opportunity to grow the visitor economy in the North East of England, developing our regional eco-system and supporting industry. Destination North East England operates across all seven local authorities.

Monday evening saw a whole host of regenerative trailblazers come together for the launch of our Regenerative Visitor Economy Framework, in partnership with Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement), The North East Combined Authority and Net Zero North East England 🌱 We wanted to say a special thank you to the Regenerative Tourism Taskforce who were involved in the co-creation of the framework from start to end, ensuring it was aligned with the needs of the industries and businesses that will benefit most from it. It was great to see many of the taskforce in attendance at the launch event (Andy Haddon, Sarah Thackray, Jess Cook, Shelley Johnson, Dr Serkan Uzunogullari, Paul Szomoru, Anna Wadcock and Simon Laing) as well as many more taskforce members supporting from afar who couldn't be there on Monday You can download our Regenerative Visitor Economy Framework here: https://lnkd.in/eRM4a_5n

Last night, more than 150 regenerative trailblazers, including North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, portfolio holder Amanda Hopgood, VisitEngland's Victoria Borwick and Patricia Yates and leaders from all seven local authorities joined us as Guy Bigwood, FIEMA unveiled our world-leading Regenerative Visitor Economy Framework 🍃✨ Going far beyond traditional sustainability thinking, the framework examines what a regenerative visitor economy would look like for the North East, centred around core pathways that deal with decarbonisation and responding to climate challenges, local supply chain innovation, investment in people and place, connecting communities and the restoration of nature, landscapes, culture and heritage. With delicious drinks made from wonky fruit kindly provided by Flawsome! Drinks | B Corp™ and Lumo, to a vegan buffet catered by a team of prison leavers supported by the Oswin Project, every aspect of our launch event had regenerative thinking at its heart.
