The UK’s largest inland hydrogen cluster
About us
D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, Cadent, and some of the region’s leading organisations such as Uniper, Toyota, Midlands Engine, East Midlands Freeport and Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership have formed a new industrial partnership called East Midlands Hydrogen, that is poised to become the UK’s largest inland hydrogen cluster. East Midlands Hydrogen is a unique proposition. Unlike other major hydrogen clusters which are coastal, this one is right in the heart of the country. It brings together an intensive cluster of hydrogen demand forecasts from around 70 industrial sites in the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and northern Leicestershire regions, who are asking for more than 10TWh of hydrogen by 2040 in total, to enable site decarbonisation. For these sites alone, access to low carbon hydrogen would enable carbon savings of 1.9 million tonnes per year, the equivalent of gas-related carbon emissions from 860,000 homes. The East Midlands region is perfectly set up for large-scale low carbon hydrogen production through electrolysis. Previously known as ‘Megawatt Valley’, its high voltage electrical transmission power lines were originally constructed to enable power export from the string of coal-fired power stations built along the river Trent. Available water from the river, coupled with imported renewable energy could enable ‘Megawatt Valley’ to metamorphose into a hydrogen production heartland at GW scale, with multiple forecasts received for a total of 500MW production capacity across the region. By connecting supply and demand through a new 100% hydrogen pipeline network, this region is poised to become the UK’s largest inland hydrogen cluster, bringing massive economic benefits to the region. A PWC report set for publication in October 2023 estimates that development of a full hydrogen supply chain in the East Midlands would contribute £10 billion GVA and 110,000 jobs created or retained by 2050.

It was great to be able to support the Insider Media roundtable on #hydrogen which took place at Loughborough University today, which was sponsored by our HyDEX programme. We had representatives from leading businesses in the region like Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, Intelligent Energy, Alstom, Cadent Gas Limited and many others, as well as leaders from academia and regional public sector organisations such as East Midlands Combined County Authority. The Midlands has tremendous potential to lead the way in hydrogen. There are numerous industries and universities in the region which are innovating in hydrogen, and the opportunities are immense, but there are also challenges to overcome in developing and kickstarting the regional hydrogen economy and building the skills base we need. Look out for Ian Griffin's article on Hydrogen in the Midlands which will be published in a couple of weeks' time in Insider magazine and online! #climatechange #hydrogenstorage #netzero #energy Midlands Innovation Midlands Engine East Midlands Hydrogen University of Nottingham Energy Institute Birmingham Energy Institute Keele University Cranfield University Loughborough University CREST - Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology WMG, University of Warwick Hydrogen UK Midlands Net Zero Hub East Midlands Freeport Kelly Manders Kathryn North Dr Katherine Mycock Helen Turner Dan Parsons Martin Freer Uniper

I chaired a very insightful and thought-provoking roundtable earlier today on the role of hydrogen in decarbonising the economy. It focused on how to ensure the East Midlands - and wider Midlands - with its hugely advantageous position when it comes to hydrogen production and storage - such as energy infrastructure, knowhow, large coastline and central location - becomes the UK centre for this alternative fuel. The roundtable heard issues around government strategy and coordination, as well as funding and skills, all needed to be fully addressed for this to happen. The event was held at the Elite Athlete Centre and Hotel at Loughborough University, which was next to the university's world-famous running track. So we just had to get a photo of the participants posing as runners on the track (Please send your headline ideas for the coverage. One of the East Midlands Hydrogen partners, the East Midlands Institute of Technology, is inviting tenders for the delivery of research to inform and shape the future of green energy skills for the #EastMidlands region. Partners across the East Midlands Hydrogen consortium are working hard to bring forward a #netzero energy strategy for the region, replacing fossil fuels in transportation, in homes and in energy intensive industries. One of the key challenges that needs to be addressed is the #skills gap – having enough people trained, capable and knowledgeable in the production, management and utilisation of new sources of energy. The East Midlands Institute of Technology is working with East Midlands Freeport on the development of future energy skills, to provide a template for how skills and education delivery should support and mirror economic growth priorities in a geographical area. If you have a strong track record in energy planning, skills planning and regional economic growth, the East Midlands Institute of Technology would like to hear from you. In partnership with East Midlands Freeport and East Midlands Hydrogen, the successful organisation can equip the Future Energy Skills Hub to drive a hydrogen and green energy revolution. Becky R. is Marketing Director at Roadgas Ltd, a local Small / Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) that supplies compressed and liquified green gas refuelling infrastructure and equipment for dispensing alternative fuels into the heavy transport sector. In this article, Becky explains why Roadgas Ltd is proud to be a member of the East Midlands Hydrogen Consortium and shares her thoughts on the importance of low carbon growth for our region’s future. Becky says: "The opportunity for my business to join East Midlands Hydrogen, the largest inland hydrogen cluster in the UK with a unique collaboration of over 60 public and private partners and businesses, large and small, across all aspects of the hydrogen value chain, was a given. "I believe this will be a game-changer for our region. The sheer potential of this is unprecedented. We have a truly unique cluster of energy generation sites, poised to drive our green energy revolution. 20 major employers have said they need more than ten terawatt-hours of hydrogen per year to decarbonise their operations and East Midlands Hydrogen Consortium members are working to ensure as much of that is generated and stored in the #EastMidlands as possible. "I’m very excited about the opportunity for #hydrogen in our region. The hydrogen economy is a sector that’s moving through its innovation and development stage at the moment, providing the potential for at least 9,000 high-skilled jobs and opportunities in a wide range of organisations across our region over the coming years. As the Director of an SME, I’m passionate about promoting and supporting smaller organisations in the engineering sector and its supply chain, as we don’t always get the focus that the larger global engineering companies in our region receive. “I think the future looks very positive for Roadgas Ltd. We are fully focused on #decarbonisation, one of the key priorities for our region and we’ll continue to champion this agenda. In my view, we could and should make the East Midlands the hydrogen centre for the UK and I’m confident that East Midlands Hydrogen, with the support of our new East Midlands Mayor, Claire Ward, will gear up to lead the way.” Will Morlidge Sally Brewis Nicola Swaney Kelly Manders Philip Canning Christopher Barrow Faye McAnulla Huw Sullivan Rachel Quinn Dan Cooper Chart.PR MCIPR Roger Mendonca Tom Newman-Taylor Katie Greenhalgh David Morris Michael Wayne Bexton Michael Gallagher Ken Harrison 👉 Read more here https://bit.ly/3KB99Mh
