The Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Caucus is recruiting a paid intern to work with us on quantitative and qualitative analysis. This internship is an excellent opportunity for people from under-represented backgrounds in the #research & #innovation sector to have a taste of working in a research team. We hope that supporters of EDICa will share with final year students and recent graduates in social sciences with data analysis skills and encourage them to apply. Closing date is currently 3 April. The internship is equivalent to four weeks full-time, and we can provide flexibility over the hours and whether the role is in-person on our Edinburgh campus, hybrid, or remote based in the UK. Find out more about our internship and prior interns' experiences on our website: https://lnkd.in/eNJKqjE3 To view the formal job advertisement and to apply, click here: https://lnkd.in/eem6jwSc #hiring #jobVacancy #internship #DataAnalysis

Yesterday Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle announced two UKRI investments into advanced technology as part of a speech at the Tech Policy Conference. The funding will support development of next-generation connectivity, quantum computing, and quantum network technologies, removing barriers to their commercialisation and ensuring the UK can exploit their benefits sooner. The investments are: ▶️ Future Communications Hubs. Researchers developing connectivity technologies capable of the enormous speed, capacity and security needed to make the most of new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), will receive a share of at least £15 million from Innovate UK and EPSRC. The funding will support the three future communications research hubs to continue their work, as well as a UK-wide experimentation platform for future telecoms research. ▶️ Quantum Missions pilot competition. Innovate UK is investing over £12 million in 10 projects to accelerate quantum computing (QC) and quantum network (QN) technologies. The resulting benefits could see breakthroughs in drug discovery, financial portfolio optimisation and the empowering of AI. It aligns with the UK’s aims to deploy the world’s most advances quantum network at scale by 2035. Head to the UKRI website to find out more. Department for Science, Innovation and Technology

Today we’ve published an independent report that provides insights into diversity in our portfolio. We commissioned this report to build on our previous work, drawing on the expertise of the Royal Statistical Society with input from The Alan Turing Institute. The report analysed diversity data including for the first time peer reviewers’ comments and scores. New findings include: 🔷 while the award rate for minority ethnic researchers is lower overall, looking at the modelled intersection of ethnicity with age, there is less difference in predicted award rates between minority ethnic and White researchers aged under 36 than those in the 36-55 and 55 and over age brackets 🔷 when applicants were asked about expectations of bias, institutional prestige was cited as a common concern. However, this was not evidenced in the analysis of outcomes by institution 🔷 looking at the interactions between the characteristics of the panel and the applicants, in interviews, having any female panellists present is linked to a higher ranking for female applicants 🔷 exploring the effect of applicant and reviewer characteristics on review scores, the largest effect is higher scoring from reviewers nominated by the applicant Full details of the findings and many other results are summarised in the Executive Summary and detailed fully in the Technical Report: https://lnkd.in/eXQvJb6f We’re now asking for community feedback, ideas, and reflections on the reports to inform our next steps: https://lnkd.in/eZjRTNpd

"For us it’s very important that research is shared back to engineers so that they can actually bring this to the real world”. We spoke to Guillermo Rein, professor of fire science at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London about how his research is helping make buildings more resilient to fire. He leads the Imperial Hazelab research group, supported by EPSRC, where they study how fire spreads, both inside buildings and in the forest, and how materials respond to fire. Their research has helped to inform building standards worldwide, so that engineers design better structures that protect people and homes from fire. #WorldEngineeringDay
