A non-profit investment vehicle aiming to improve the lives of low-income people.
About us
The Global Innovation Fund invests in social innovations that aim to improve the lives and opportunities of millions of people in the developing world. Through our grants and risk capital, we support breakthrough solutions to global development challenges from social enterprises, for-profit firms, non-profit organisations, researchers and government agencies. We are global in breadth and scope: open to the best approaches to solve any major development problem in low- or lower-middle income countries. We seek solutions that can scale up commercially, through the public/ philanthropic sector, or through a combination of both in order to achieve widespread adoption. GIF offers grants, loans (including convertible debt), and equity investments ranging from £30,000 to £10 million. We provide financing at three different stages to meet the needs of innovators at varying phases of their development, ranging from early start-up to larger scale implementation. We define ‘innovation’ broadly to include new business models, policy practices, technologies, behavioural insights, or ways of delivering products and services that benefit the poor in developing countries. GIF is non-profit innovation fund headquartered in London. We are supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the United States Agency for International Development, the Omidyar Network, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia. From droughts to floods, Africa is facing severe impacts from climate change. But the impact doesn’t stop at the environment—it affects mental health too. Our latest report highlights how communities in Kotido, Uganda are struggling with increased mental health challenges due to these environmental shifts. This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we call on everyone to support the mental well-being of those hit hardest by the climate crisis. 🌍 Discover our findings: https://lnkd.in/g9CVzA4U #MentalHealthAwareness #StrongMinds #ClimateChange

On International Day of the Girl Child, we're recognizing the huge potential of girls in the rural communities we serve. Girls of today are tomorrow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs, mentors and leaders! We're working to give all children a stronger start in life through quality care and education. Our programme ensures pre-primary age children learn through play and receive responsive care which develops important socio-emotional, literacy and mathematics skills. Our parenting workshops encourage parents to give their girls the same opportunities as their boys to learn and grow so they can meet their full potential. By supporting boys and girls during this critical stage, their chances of success increase, despite growing up in environments affected by climate effects, poverty and gender inequality. Let's invest in our girls to strengthen societies, inspire change and create a fairer future. #InternationalDayOfTheGirlChild

We were delighted to learn that Aadith Moorthy, Founder and CEO of GIF portfolio company Boomitra, has been included in the 2024 #TIME100Next list. Boomitra works to ramp up carbon sequestration on a global scale. By providing a soil carbon marketplace, it allows governments and companies to purchase carbon offset credits, and uses the revenue to reward farmers for adopting soil and climate-friendly farming techniques. To date, Boomitra has helped farmers to remove 10 million metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere 🌎 Find out more about Aadith's impact: https://lnkd.in/d3rEW7qc Find out more about GIF's work with Boomitra: https://lnkd.in/erX29Cgc #innovatingtogether #innovation #climateaction #technology #investment

Ahead of World Mental Health Day next week, we would like to celebrate the work of GIF grantee StrongMinds, who provides accessible group therapy sessions to women in Africa suffering from depression. It is estimated that there are at least 30 million cases of depression in Africa. The illness has negative impacts on all facets of life, including education, prospects for economic and food security, productivity, and health outcomes. It is known to disproportionately affect women, with 1 in 4 worldwide suffering at least once during their lifetime. StrongMinds provides life changing mental health services to low-income African women and adolescents by delivering facilitator and peer-led Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G) courses. These deliver impressive healing rates of between 71% and 95%. StrongMinds adapts IPT-G with role-playing activities, interactive charts and visual aids, tailored to the cultures and literacy levels of their participants. GIF’s grant of $1.6 million supported StrongMinds to significantly increase their reach through partnerships with civil society organisations and governments in Zambia and Uganda. Opening Labour Pathways for Displaced Talent in Italy! 🇮🇹 🌍 We are excited to share the successful outcomes of our recent hiring mission to Jordan, conducted in partnership with Mattioli and AGENZIA FORMATIVA E. G. GHIRARDI. As a result, 15 talented refugees with expertise in goldsmithing have been selected to participate in a technical and language training program, leading to employment opportunities in Italy. 🥇 27 Syrian and Iraqi refugees were interviewed during the mission, including 5 women, with 82% under the age of 35. These candidates were pre-selected by TBB and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in collaboration with Turquoise Mountain in Jordan. This initiative is supported by Italy’s Law 50 of the Flows Decree, showcasing the important role of employers in facilitating safe, regular pathways for refugees to rebuild their lives through meaningful work. A special thanks to our partners Unione Industriali Torino, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, Pathways International, and Diaconia Valdese for their collaboration and support.
