Can aviation’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact keep up with the rapid growth in travel demand projected for the coming decades? The industry is at a crossroads, facing rising concerns about its energy consumption and climate impact. T&E’s latest report shows the sector plans to double passenger traffic between 2019 and 2050, even as the need for substantial emissions reductions becomes increasingly urgent. This growth could lead to a 59% increase in fuel consumption by 2050, with the EU potentially burning more fossil fuel in 2049 than in 2019 (a year that already saw the highest traffic volumes on record), despite meeting SAF mandate commitments under ReFuel EU Aviation. Even with the advancement, SAF supply may not meet demand, and biofuels’ limited scalability could force the industry to rely on unsustainable resources. The report focuses on the need for eSAF and demand curbs as solutions, and sadly overlooks the transformative potential of alternative propulsion using hydrogen and electric-power. With the right focus, zero-emission technologies can make a big contribution to decarbonization targets, unlocking cleaner air, reduced noise, energy independence and increased connectivity in the process. • “We welcome the news that the Government has launched the consultation on the Gas Shipper Obligation, an important step to help build infrastructure and capacity of hydrogen supply in the UK and support R&D and testing of hydrogen technologies. Hydrogen will play an essential role in decarbonising aviation, bringing significant benefits to people around the world as well as to the UK economy.”  – Russ Dunn, Chief Technology Officer, GKN Aerospace and Chair of Hydrogen in Aviation.   Since we were formed in 2023, HIA has called for swift investment in hydrogen production and infrastructure. This is especially important for sectors with hard to abate emissions, like aviation. This action will support near term supply of hydrogen for aerospace R&D, whilst also creating capacity and experience in producing, transporting and handling hydrogen to support the longer term ramp up of hydrogen in aviation. Last week, we welcomed German Chancellor and Member of the German Parliament, Olaf Scholz to our Rolls-Royce Deutschland (RRD) facility in Dahlewitz. The visit was an opportunity to showcase our unique capabilities and the pivotal role we play in the aerospace industry, driven by development of groundbreaking technologies and a relentless commitment to technical excellence. The day began with a tour of our Business Aviation Aircraft Availability Centre from which the team provides worldwide 24/7 support for more than 9,000 engines. Guests were then given the opportunity to meet 20 apprentices in our Aircraft Engine Mechanics workshop where we’re training the next generation of aerospace professionals by combining rigorous technical training with real-world application. Our Dahlewitz site, which has been operational for more than 30 years, is home to employees representing over 60 nationalities and this diverse workforce demonstrates the power of inclusion in driving innovation. We’re growing this team and are recruiting for over 100 new highly skilled roles to help meet the growing global demand for our cutting-edge aero engine technology. • “Hydrogen isn’t just vital for the decarbonisation of heavy industry; we need it for aviation.” We welcome these comments today from Sarah Jones MP, Minister of State at the Department for Business and Trade and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It’s great to see the Minister recognising the importance of hydrogen to the future of the UK aviation industry. As an alliance of aviation, aerospace and hydrogen companies deeply committed to decarbonising aviation and securing its widespread benefits for the UK, we believe that hydrogen will play a significant role in this transition. Since we were formed in 2023, HIA has called for swift investment in hydrogen production. We now need sustained action to increase the supply of liquid hydrogen available for aviation R&D and testing, alongside the development of a wider hydrogen economy. This is critical to our ambitions for a UK aviation sector that leads the world in hydrogen-powered flight.

  • 2025 will be an important year for the UK and Hydrogen in Aviation (HIA) members as we continue to engage with our stakeholders to promote the huge sustainability benefits that hydrogen can bring to our sector. HIA’s new Chair, Russ Dunn, Chief Technology Officer of GKN Aerospace, will lead work with HIA partners to set in motion the steps needed for the UK to secure its position as a global leader in hydrogen aviation. Over the next year, HIA will be focused on exploring in detail a number of the key recommendations outlined in our milestone delivery report to decarbonise aviation and make the UK ready for the transition to hydrogen.  Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/eqe839ER
