Delighted to have been part of the team which helped Berkeley Square Developments recently secure full planning permission for its signature project at the heart of the Berol Quarter campus in Tottenham Hale. The project involves the delivery of 210 build-to-rent homes in a 30-storey landmark building, new community space, restaurants, a bridge link, and the comprehensive retrofit and extension of Berol House, the historic Berol pencil factory. The retrofit will include 47,000 sq ft of modern office space along with retail and maker and creator spaces on the ground floor. A truly exciting scheme which exemplifies what can be achieved at higher densities to drive meaningful urban regeneration. Read Bethan's latest blog, Spatial Development Strategies - a planning panacea? https://lnkd.in/gChrKnTr Spatial Development Strategies (SDSs) could potentially play a key role in supporting local plan-making and achieving the Government's objective of delivering 1.5m homes across this Parliament. With the principle of strategic planning forming a key part of the Government’s proposed planning reforms, the Planning and Infrastructure Bill represents the next step towards bringing strategic planning – with all its strengths and opportunities - back to the forefront of plan-making. But what are some of the immediate challenges that need to be considered, and what questions remain unanswered?

There has been a lot of movement in planning policy lately. Although the historic environment wasn't the intended focus of the latest reforms, the wider planning balance is shifting, and the introduction of Grey Belt has placed a renewed emphasis on old questions, like “what is a historic town?”. Statutory Consultees such as the Gardens Trust could be removed, and fees for Listed Building Consent may be on the horizon. It's a lot to grapple with. My blog explores what it all means for the historic environment, and the implications for applicants and decision-makers. #heritage #NPPF #Greybelt #planningreforms #historicenvironment

Planning and Infrastructure Bill – Powering Clean Energy Growth? View Katie Brown's blog: https://lnkd.in/eNwekxKY Those in the planning and development industry will all be aware of the Planning and Infrastructure Bill that was published this week. The Bill aims to speed up and streamline the delivery of new homes and critical infrastructure. The Bill is the Labour Government’s next step for delivering positive change in the planning system, something which we welcome. Lichfields has and will comment on the Bill’s implications for our industry and this piece looks at those proposals for energy infrastructure which aim to support the delivery of the Government’s Clean Power 2030 target. Clean power by 2030 would mean that Great Britain generates enough clean power to meet its total annual domestic electricity demand, backed up by a gas supply to be used only when needed. This would mean clean sources delivering at least 95% of energy generation. At the moment we generate 60%. So how does the Government propose to facilitate this and what can we do as an industry to seek to ensure this target is met?

Data Centres: No Longer the Planning Ugly Duckling https://lnkd.in/ea8XkKVW From his first day at Lichfields, Henry Gomm has been involved in some way with the promotion of data centre projects through the planning system. Faced with a lack of enthusiasm from Planning Departments, superficially referencing low job generation and power-hungry credentials of the sector, this has not been an easy gig. But things are changing, and the pace of change is rapid. In the midst of the Labour government’s push for increased rates of house building, recent reform has sought to unlock other investment opportunities to support the modern digital economy and nowhere is this more relevant than the data centre industry. #datacentres #CriticalNationalInfrastructure #Infrastructure #NPPF #PlanningandInfrastructureBill
