  • Changing lives and transforming green spaces 💚 This week we told you a bit about our Supported Employment Service who have been helping those with learning disabilities find paid employment. Today, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the Nature’s Landscapes team who make a difference to the spaces we live, and the lives of those who maintain them. They are part of the council’s Supported Employment Service and provide professional grounds maintenance and gardening services across the city. Led by the incredible Alan Wear, the team offers more than just jobs. They provide a pathway to paid work for those with disabilities who need a chance to develop their skills, gain confidence and build fulfilling careers. Starting as assistant gardeners, team members can progress to supervisory roles by being supported with training and development opportunities. For many, this work has been life-changing: 🌱 "I’ve been here over 20 years and love seeing the impact of our work," shares Bobby who is a Gardener 🌱 "This job transformed my life. I’ve gone from part-time work to full-time and love being part of such a great team," says Michael an Assistant Gardener 🌱 "Alan supported me to earn qualifications and even win Apprentice of the Year," adds Dale is a Supervisor The team’s work extends beyond regular maintenance and they were paid a visit by Cllr Adam Walker (pictured on the left), our Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Health and Prevention, who has praised the work of Alan and the team. “We get a lot of positive feedback from locals,” says Alan. “It’s clear they value the pride we take in our work, whether it’s tidying paths, cleaning war memorials for Remembrance Day or creating a garden for Newcastle West End Food Bank to grow their own food. It’s jobs like these that make us proud.” Find out more about Nature’s Landscapes and the Supported Employment Service using the link in our comments 👇

  • Meet Stephanie 👋 She found employment at McDonalds with the help and guidance of our Supported Employment Service. Stephanie hasn’t looked back and the role has changed her life. It’s given her newfound confidence, skills and independence. What started as a placement has led to long-term paid employment – and she is a fantastic asset to the company. We help many people like Stephanie find work. We have more than 60 staff who have been employed here at the council thanks to this team. And we want to make sure that others with learning disabilities have the opportunity to earn paid employment. Please take time to listen to Stephanie’s story and find out more using the link in the comments 👇

  • Transforming tower blocks to make them warmer and more comfortable for residents 💚 Air source heat pumps have safely made their way to the roof of a Shieldfield tower block where they're being installed as part of major regeneration works that are replacing outdated heating systems with a new energy-efficient solution. Residents in Pandon Court, King Charles Tower and Lort House will also benefit from improved insulation, new windows and new roofing as part of this project we're delivering in partnership with Equans UK & Ireland.

  • Reducing the risk of flooding impacting our communities 💚 💙 Blue Green Newcastle launched in 2024 as we set out to better protect our city from flooding events. We're exploring a number of schemes through Blue Green Newcastle to implement innovative flood and water management techniques that make us more resilient to climate change. It will see a range of measures implemented like this scheme at Kenton Bar, which Cllr Juna Sathian, Newcastle City Council Cabinet Member for Climate and Transport, recently visited. This has seen the installation of basins, adapting the local landscape to capture excess water and reduce the risk of floodwater affecting local households, schools and other premises. 🗣️ "It's really important we invest in flood resilience measures, especially with the number of extreme weather events we're seeing across the world," said Cllr Sathian. "Managing flood risk is a priority for my portfolio and Blue Green Newcastle is already helping to protect homes, businesses and infrastructure in the city, and we're committed to enhancing our flood resilience through this project in the years to come."

  • 📸 Photos from the Holocaust Memorial Day event On Sunday, our leader Cllr Karen Kilgour gathered with people from all faiths and backgrounds to mark 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, honouring the millions of lives lost and those who survived. This year’s national theme, ‘For a Better Future’, reminds us of the ongoing need to challenge hatred and prejudice, ensuring the atrocities of the past are never forgotten. Speakers included the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Rob Higgins, who emphasised the importance of commemorating this significant hope for a brighter future. #HolocaustMemorialDay #HMD2025 #LightTheDarkness
