Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes when we do our net-zero engagement work at Oxford Net Zero? In this blog, Molly James, Alexis McGivern and I unpack what we learned from conducting a rapid-response engagement to some of the Scope 3 controversy that unfolded last year. In summary: 1️⃣ Rethink what constitutes success: opening up an issue to view the problem areas is a success in itself, especially if you rally together a group of people who can help you solve them down the line. 2️⃣ Question baseline assumptions of the group: why are you bringing people together to talk about a subject, does the validity of that subject need to be unpacked before solutions to any problems can be found? 3️⃣ Complex questions take time to unpack! Duh! Make use of different media to tackle the question - a workshop alone might not be enough, iterations through documents or miroboards might help 'settle' issues 4️⃣ Consider the role of facilitators in opening doors and conversations: a lot of the work we do fits into a 'hegemonic' science-driven knowledge system, but what role can we play as academics to bring critique into governance and open the door for alternative ways of knowing and understanding problems? What have your experiences of bringing diverse groups together been like? Do you have any key learnings that you're taking forward when you convene groups? 🗓️ 🚨 Rescheduled: Net Zero Good Practice Briefing! What does it mean to practice ‘good net zero’? How can corporate entities pursue net zero with integrity? Amidst a rapidly evolving landscape of net zero-related policy and regulation, voluntary initiatives are key in providing guidance for those entities embarking on a journey to net zero emissions. But first we have to learn how to navigate the thicket of voluntary standards, and to understand areas of convergence. Our recently published ‘Net Zero Good Practice’ snapshot is an improved tool which strives to do just this. Through examining, organising and presenting guidance from a selection of key net zero initiatives, this graphic highlights striking convergence in principles (the ‘what’ of good net zero) and specifics (the ‘how’ of good net zero).
