Professor David Beerling, who leads the Enhanced Rock Weathering Demonstrator project, was recently interviewed for an article in Scientific American on the greenhouse gas removal potential of enhanced rock weathering (ERW). Prof Beerling estimates that if ERW were scaled up globally, it could remove as much as 2 billion metric tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere annually. Last year's State of CDR report found that we will need to be removing 7 to 9 billion tonnes of CO2 every year by 2050 (alongside rapidly reducing emissions) if we are to meet the 1.5C Paris Agreement target, so scaling up ERW could make a significant difference. A good understanding of soil carbon sequestration, and how to enhance it, is an important part of greenhouse gas removal efforts. In a new article for illuminem, Dr Dan Evans, a member of the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network, explains why we need a transdisciplinary approach to understand what soil can do.
Delighted to have written the inaugural Thought Leadership article for the Greenhouse Gas Removal Future Leaders Network, and their new partnership with illuminem - one of the world's leading sustainability information & data platforms. My article (only an eight-min read ⏲️) looks at the "known unknowns" in our understanding of #soil #carbon #sequestration as a #GGR strategy! It's nice to see ideas grow. Back in 2021 when we started CO₂RE - The Greenhouse Gas Removal Hub, we noticed that researchers with early-stage ideas were struggling to access funding just to build a quick proof-of-concept. We started awarding parcels of £50k to fund promising innovations. Let them fail fast, or succeed in making something that can go on to further development. Eight Pathfinders have been awarded, with more to come: https://lnkd.in/eQi-qGgm. And now, Bezos Earth Fund has created their Greenhouse Gas Removal Ideation Prize - awarding parcels of up to $50k to inspire new ideas. Two of the first 10 winners are past recipients of our Pathfinder awards. Growth in action! https://lnkd.in/eU8vXYJ6 With gratitude to Paul Rouse and Richard Templer who nurtured the Pathfinders concept, as well as congratulations to the Bezos Earth Fund team, and respect to the innovators with winning ideas, including Wei Li and Jonathan Ritson.
