We're very excited to sponsor this year's George Lansbury Memorial Lecture with Lord Neil Kinnock. On Thursday 21 November, Lord Neil Kinnock will speak about his 60 years as a political activist - and speak on the need to ensure digital communication serves democracy. This annual event is organised by the George Lansbury Trust, in partnership with The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Library and LSE Department of Government. Poplar and Bow have a very special connection to the George Lansbury Trust. George Lansbury was a social campaigner and politician who has made an enormous contribution to our local history. We've even named one of our estates after him. Today marks the start of the London Mural Festival, which is produced by the lovely team at Global Street Art. We wanted to celebrate some of the murals in and around Poplar and Bow. Some of these are pieces that mean so much to our community because they've been involved in their creation. Some commemorate our rich history and the people who make Poplar and Bow so special, And some of them put a smile on our face as we're walking around. A lot of these are also down to close working with our partners. One great example is the beautiful shopfronts on Aberfeldy that EcoWorld London worked with us on. A big shout out to others we've worked with - The London Mural Company and Jan Kattein Architects. Any favourites? Less us know in the comments. #OnlyInTowerHamlets #StreetArt #Murals #TowerHamlets #EastLondon

You may think it's the sunglasses that make these two volunteers look cool. But it's not... It's actually the fact that they're giving up their time to volunteer in the community. These two are from a team of amazing people from the EE store in Ilford who came to help out with a community barbecue at our St Paul's Way Community Centre. It was a fun day for all involved. Muhammad, the Store Manager, said: “We, the EE S05 team, were thrilled to attend and support the community barbecue with HARCA in Tower Hamlets. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community, share in the festivities, and contribute to the vibrant spirit of togetherness that defines this area. We look forward to making new memories and strengthening our bonds with everyone involved.”   Are you looking for a local volunteering opportunity for your team? 😍 ✨ It was great seeing our colleagues putting their climbing skills to the test . This is all building up to our 10 Towers Challenge charity fundraiser for Asthma + Lung UK and The Aberfeldy Project. 😍✨ 📅 The fundraiser is on Saturday 28 September. It will see participants climbing up and down the steps of 10 tower blocks in east London. The number of floors they’ll scale is similar to the Empire State Building and covers around 4,000 steps. 👣 👉 Registration for the event is now open. You can find out more at: https://bit.ly/3XbOgyn We’re raising funds for two incredible charities that make a huge difference in our community: Asthma + Lung UK  research, campaign, and provide advice on lung health, aiming to change perceptions and improve lives. Rejvi and Ahelam met a few weeks ago while volunteering at the Summer in the Square event at Aberfeldy. The two women are both from Bangladesh – and bonded over their experience of coming to a new country and establishing new roots. They both attended a volunteering fair hosted by the Volunteer Centre Tower Hamlets. They hoped to build their confidence and communication skills. “It was so fun,” Rejvi said. “I made a new friend and I got a break from my baby and my husband. I’m always looking for jobs and not hearing anything back – so I felt happy to do something that will help me with new skills and that can build my confidence.” This month it is South Asian Heritage Month. We are celebrating the amazing people from the south Asian community who make Poplar and Bow such an incredible place to live and work. Our volunteers, like Ahelam and Rejvi, are a big part of that. ✨ The power of resident placemaking 🌟 🎉 The recent ‘Our Teviot Festival’ was a brilliant example of the success of resident-focused placemaking. 🥳 This fun, free family event brought together hundreds of people from across the local area. It celebrated the incredible progress in bringing forward exciting regeneration plans, in partnership with the community. 🤝 The festival is a key component of the social value investment we're making alongside our development partners, Hill Group UK. We’ve made a commitment to ensuring the community benefits from new opportunities throughout the regeneration. 💜 We’d like to say an enormous thank you to the organisations, stakeholders and community who made this event possible. 👇 To find out more about Teviot regeneration, which is set to deliver around 1900 new homes and a host of community facilities, check out the link in comments WeAreSpotlight Leaders in Community #Placemaking #CommunityEngagement #SocialValue #UKhousing #regeneration

Harri originally hails from Kerala in south India. Harri is the lead designer and director of the fashion brand HARRI. They are based at Poplar Works, on Abbott Road. Poplar Works is a new space for fashion in east London. Developed in partnership with London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, and The Trampery | Certified B Corp, there are over 40 studios available across two sites for people working in fashion. Harri said: "There are so many people in London and so many cultures. You can go to one area and feel you belong, and go to another and feel like you don't. I like that feeling. There's more scope to learn. You're exposed to so many different things. "My south Asian heritage influences the way I practice my work, the way I interact with my colleagues. The way I grew up, the way I was treated at home... all of these things influence. Probably more than south Asian culture, immigrant culture is what I have. The culture of coming to a new place and being exposed to new things." “HARCA brings people together. People are welcoming to one another. You may sit down next to someone and you may not understand them, but you’re willing to help them. And people really do help each other out.” Sabiha Khanam is our Volunteering Partnerships Manager. She's worked with us for five years. With the theme of this year's South Asian Heritage Month being "free to be me", Sabiha told us how her Bangladeshi culture inspired her to work in volunteering, and how our workplace enables her to be free to be herself.
